The holidays have been awful for Marty Cordova and his family. The 1995 AL Rookie of the Year spent the last seven days in a Salt Lake City hospital at the bedside of his 15-year-old daughter.
On the morning of Dec. 16, Ashley McAdam was heading to Herriman High School just outside Salt Lake City. She was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a friend that was hit by a truck as it pulled into school. In addition to the head trauma, she broke her jaw, elbow and thighbone.
So far, she has been unresponsive. Cordova and Ashley's mother, Tamara McAdam-Burleigh, have set up a Facebook page "Supporting Ashley McAdam" where people can offer support. Friends and family have written dozens of messages and posted songs, photos and videos.
The teenage driver of the car broke her collar bone, and a passenger in the back seat needed back surgery. The truck struck the car right where Ashley was sitting.
"She's the victim of a tragic accident," Cordova said. "What I want is for people to see that this can happen to your own kids. Hug your kids spend time with them. And pay attention when you're behind the wheel of a car. Anything can happen."
Cordova, a high school friend of Dana White, is often seen around UFC events. He was recently seen in a White vlog (5:20 mark) before UFC 124. Cordova was on the roadtrip to Montreal.
The Cordovas are asking for donations.

Eliminate that blank spot next to Alistair Overeem's name on the Dynamite!! 2010 fight list. Todd Duffee is in Japan, took this photo and is ready to take on one of the hottest fighters in MMA.
Duffee, once considered a top prospect at heavyweight with the UFC, is looking to rebuild his reputation after getting booted from the promotion over personality issues. Duffee (6-1) recorded a seven-second KO in his UFC debut, but then suffered an upset loss at the hands of Mike Russow in May at UFC 114.
We're glad to see Duffee steered clear of the Japanese cross-dressing routine during Wednesday's press proceedings. The message on the T-shirt is a nice touch.
That "chick" Shinya Aoki is fighting is K-1 MAX Japan Tournament Champion Yuichiro Nagashima. As if the get-up isn't weird enough, the fight will be waged under mixed rules according to MMAjunkie:
In addition to the heavyweight bout, DREAM officials clarified the "special rules" for Aoki vs. Nagashima. One three-minute kickboxing round will be followed by a five-minute MMA round. Open-finger gloves will be used, and if a winner hasn't been determined by knockout or submission, the fight will be declared a draw.
Bob Sapp is also on the card fighting with special rules:
Officials also clarified the rules for a Bob Sapp vs. Shinichi Suzukawa special-rules fight. The fight will be held under MMA rules, but the fighters won't wear gloves. Closed-fist strikes are not allowed, though palm strikes are.
Dynamite 2010!! card (HDNet Friday 4 a.m. ET/1 a.m. PT):

As always with Japanese fight cards, Cagewriter will have live coverage of Dynamite!! 2010 on Friday morning beginning around 4:30 a.m. ET. Much of the coverage will be on Twitter. You can follow us @stevecofield and @maggiehendricks.
Two of the biggest stars in the history of MMA sat down for a long interview in 2006. Liddell was prepping for his UFC 66 showdown with Tito Ortiz. Even back then, Liddell was wary of Tito showing up for a fight.
Hughes was coming off his UFC 63 win over B.J. Penn. He talks about Georges St. Pierre disrespecting him coming into the Octagon after that win. Hughes would go on to loss his belt against GSP at UFC 65.
This was a great interview because Liddell forgot he was on live radio and cursed 15-plus times.

Our friends from Fight! Magazine bring us a look at Clay Guida and his spartan lifestyle while training in New Mexico for his UFC 125 bout with Takanori Gomi.
While working on his fight game in New Mexico, Guida stays on an RV that he parks on a reservation. It's not the most conventional digs for a professional athlete, but it works for him.
Guida talks about how his training has changed since joining Greg Jackson's Camp. He's been doing more than officiating chicken nugget-eating contests. The training is more structured and he can constantly work on the fundamentals. Since going to Jackson's, he's 2-1, beating Shannon Gugerty and Rafael dos Anjos. Will that be enough to beat Gomi?

The UFC tried something neat tonight by allowing the fans to hand out some bonus money. There was a lot on line. With a near-record gate of $4.586 million, the UFC was handing out $100,000 each to the fighters that the fans said put on the Fight of the Night.
Slap Cagewriter on the back, we called it.
When the news first emerged shortly before the start of UFC 124, we asked if the fans would judge objectively or turn it into a popularity contest?
We got our answer. Georges St. Pierre's destruction of Josh Koscheck (50-45 on all cards) was given the fan's nod as the best fight.
"The reporters aren't happy with it," Dana White joked at the postfight press conference. "It's one of the hazards. (The fans) are always chirping about how we mess it up and here we are."
White thought the real Fight of the Night was on the preliminary card. Sean Pierson and Matt Riddle beat the living hell out of each for three rounds.
The UFC and White even tried to give the fans a gentle nudge by showing the fight on the pay-per-view.
If you cast a vote at UFCvote.com, hope you enjoyed the chance to be the boss, now you're fired.
"They blew their chance," White said. "That's it. It's over."
White said he'd take care of Pierson and Riddle. White also joked with St. Pierre telling him that he owes $100,000 to his buddy Pierson.

There's good news and bad news for the opponents of electronics in motorcycle racing from today's meeting of the Grand Prix Commission, held in Madrid in Spain. MotoGP's rule-making body met to discuss changes to the regulations for the 2011 and 2012 seasons, and electronics was one of the subjects under discussion.
But the first order of business was to rearrange practice. The changes made in the cost-cutting frenzy between the 2008 and 2009 seasons have finally been scrapped once again, and the four-practice schedule used by MotoGP for so many years before makes a welcome return. The schedule had been partially reinstated at the end of the 2010 season, with four sessions of 45 minutes replacing the three one-hour sessions which had been used for the past two seasons. Though the reception was overwhelmingly positive, the one complaint that riders had being that the 45 minute sessions left little time to make changes during the session.
That problem has now been solved, as the GP Commission has agreed to return to four one-hour sessions for the MotoGP class from 2011. The Moto2 class will see four sessions of 45 minutes on each race weekend, while the 125cc class will have two sessions of 45 minutes on Friday and Saturday morning, and two sessions of half an hour in the afternoons.

Stefan Struve showed off his experience in a first-round TKO of Sean McCorkle at UFC 124 in Montreal on Saturday.
McCorkle started the fight with a slam takedown, and then moved into an immediate Kimura. Struve calmly moved towards the cage and worked his arms out from McCorkle's control, never letting McCorkle get full control. After Struve freed his arms, McCorkle maintained top control, then nearly gave up an armbar. Struve remained calm, and at the right moment reached in for a Kimura. Instead of using it to submit McCorkle, Struve turned him over and moved into full mount. He rained down punches until referee Yves Levigne stopped the bout at 3:55.
Immediately after the bout, Struve asked for cheers for McCorkle, dismissing their pre-fight trash talk as part of the job.
Though McCorkle is nine years older, Struve had the upper hand when it comes to fight experience. Struve has 25 fights under his belt, seven in the UFC, while this was just McCorkle's second UFC bout.

"What a great way to finish that up!" Reed Harris, general manager of the WEC, said to start the final press conference for the WEC, following a blockbuster fight between Anthony Pettis and Ben Henderson. Harris was referring to the gravity-defying kick from Pettis that secured his win over Henderson and the WEC lightweight title. Other notes from the WEC 53 press conference:
-- The fight of the night bonus was given to Henderson/Pettis for their five-round bout, knockout of the night to Eddie Wineland for knocking out Ken Stone with a slam, and submission of the night was to Shane Roller for his rear naked choke of former champion Jamie Varner. The bonuses were for $10,000.
-- Henderson was emotional after the fight, thanking the WEC and his home crowd of Glendale, Ariz. He said he didn't remember the kick, but that he knows it will be on the highlight reel for a while.
-- "It still doesn't feel real," Pettis said about his title. He said he has done that amazing kick in practice before, but felt the pressure to do something big going into the final round of the fight. Henderson admitted that he was woozy after the kick, but conscious.
-- Cruz continued to push for a rematch with Urijah Faber, and pointed out how different he is as a fighter. "I'm a completely different fighter. My stand-up's better, my wrestling's better, my ground game's better. I'm on a whole different level than Urijah," Cruz said.
-- After the final WEC fights, Harris spoke of his fighters like a proud father. "All these guys are going to make a mark in the UFC, and I couldn't be prouder," Harris said.
-- "When it first happened, I was happy because I got the knockout, but then when he wasn't moving, I was worried," Eddie Wineland said about the frightening knockout of Ken Stone. He said that he made sure he got word Stone's health after the fight.
-- Though there were plenty of UFC stars on hand in Arizona, Harris was happiest about having a Bear in attendance. Harris, a native of suburban Chicago, said that he was excited to see Jim McMahon at the fights, the quarterback of the Super Bowl XX champion Chicago Bears.
-- Pettis' first fight in the UFC will be for the UFC lightweight title with the winner of the Jan. 1 bout between champ Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, but he doesn't care who it is. "I haven't had time to think about Edgar/Maynard yet," Pettis said. "I was fighting Ben Henderson, and it's all I cared about."
-- Cruz said he'd happily accept a coaching gig on "The Ultimate Fighter" against Urijah Faber. "I would accept it, and I would be stoked. It would be awesome, because I'd get my loss back."
-- Harris said that several of the unaired preliminary fights will be available for free on UFC.com, and the Brad Pickett-Ivan Menjivar decision will be on Versus.com on Friday. More fights will be released over the weekend.

Alistair Overeem passed up on some big MMA fights this year to add the label of kickboxing champ to his resume. It paid off.
He suffered some rough moments last year in K-1, but with more dedication to his striking training in 2010, Overeem was a powerhouse in Tokyo this morning.
The Dutchman got better as the K-1 World Grand Prix 2010 went along. He won three fights in one night to take the WGP title and did so by beating out several K-1 legends.
By the time, he reached the final without a mark on his face, Peter Aerts was in big trouble. A fellow Dutchman, Aerts traded shots with the beast for about 35 seconds before Overeem overwhelmed him.
"The Reem" trapped Aerts in a corner and drilled him with a right hand followed by a body shot. Aerts fells to his knees. The referee jumped in to give Aerts a ten count, but the 40-year-old legend said he couldn't go any longer. Overeem won the tournament as a plus-205 choice.
The 6-foot-5, 261-pound, Overeem is unofficially the first heavyweight fighter to hold a major MMA belt and win a K-1 WGP title. He's also the Strikeforce MMA champ. The K-1 accolades only add to his reputation as an MMA star.
One downside of the win is the fact that Overeem is a virtual lock to try and defend his K-1 honor in 2011, meaning he'll be locked up for most of the November and December prepping if he can get out of the first round.
Overeem's toughest fight this morning actually came in the opening round.
Overeem is far from slick. He walks straight forward, willing to eat big shots so he can land his own bombs. That approach almost cost him against Tyrone Spong.
Early in the fight, the 231-pound Spong was too fast. Spong caught Overeem with a great counter left hook as the big guy tried a flying knee. It put the Dutchman on queer street. Spong wailed away and landed four or five more huge left hands, and got Overeem on the ropes with 1:45 left in the first. Overeem survived and his power just sapped Spong the rest of the way.
That career-high 231 pounds may have cost Spong in the long run.
Gohkan Saki was the opponent in the semis, but much like Aerts, the Turkish born fighter had to fight a war in his previous bout. Saki and Daniel Ghita kicked the hell out of each for four rounds. Saki won but his body was brutalized.
Overeem looked slow and was easy to hit, but he just waited for the smaller fighter to slow down, then he unleashed two vicious body kicks. The second got Saki to quit. HDNet's Michael Schiavello reported that Saki had broken his elbow and his right hand.
Aerts was looking to become a four-time WGP champ. Unfortunately, the old guy was also a mess by the time he faced Overeem. He ate way too many punches from 6-11, 292-pound Semmy Schilt in the semifinals. Aerts outlasted Schilt in that fight, but the damage had been done. There were actually thoughts he may not be able to fight in the final. Bettors pushed the line minus-450 to minus-645 on Overeem by the opening bell.

Josh Koscheck didn't get to fly away in a helicopter like he had hoped. And now, it'd be hazardous to his health to do so.
Josh Gross at ESPN.com confirms that the welterweight challenger suffered a broken orbital bone during his one-sided loss to Georges St. Pierre.
"Jab" St. Pierre used a stiff left throughout the first round to bust up Koscheck. With just five minutes gone by in the fight, Koscheck's right eye was almost completely shut.
Koscheck's trainer Bob Cook said the fighter extended his stay in Montreal and will head to Boston for surgery on the eye.
He cannot fly home to San Jose, Calif., because an air pocket formed behind the broken orbital bone, making air travel dangerous. UFC officials arranged for Koscheck and Cook to drive Sunday afternoon from Montreal to Boston, where the 33-year-old fighter is expected to undergo surgery Monday or Tuesday.
The injury is similar to the one boxer Antonio Margarito suffered during his brutal beatdown at the hands of Manny Pacquiao.
Koscheck couldn't see out of the eye and GSP took advantage of it, landing jabs and left hooks whenever he wanted to in the fourth and fifth rounds. After the fight, UFC analyst Joe Rogan offered a hand shake to Koscheck. The fighter ignored the offer, but it was clear the fighter couldn't see Rogan's hand out of his right eye.
Late in the fight, Koscheck was experiencing considerable pain. Between rounds, Koscheck was wincing and jerking his head away anytime his cornermen tried put an ice bag on the eye.
The American trash talked for months, leading up the welterweight title showdown against the French-Canadian St. Pierre. He joked before the fight that if he pulled the upset, he'd need to leave city via helicopter from the top of the Bell Centre.

Eddie Wineland and Ken Stone had a frightening moment during the preliminary card at WEC 53. From Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole, who was cageside:
Stone pulled guard and Wineland walked him across the cage and backed him to the fence. Then, he did a Rampage Japan-style slam and Stone was out cold immediately. Down for 5-10 minutes and then out on a stretcher.
Stone was taken from the arena in a stretcher, but he did not sustain any serious injuries, and was moving and breathing without trouble.
Otherwise, the WEC 53 undercard was called by several on-site media the most exciting undercard they've seen. Only two fights went to the judges cards.
Complete undercard results:
Renan Barao def. Chris Cariaso via submission via submission (rear-naked choke) - Round 1, 3:47
Yuri Alcantara def. Ricardo Lamas via knockout (punches) - Round 1, 3:26
