Francis Carmont, Tom Lawlor to Fight at UFC 154

http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc/2012/...ght-at-ufc-154

Francis Carmont impressed observers in his most recent fight. The performance has earned him a bout in his hometown.

Carmont and "Filthy" Tom Lawlor have agreed to meet in a middleweight matchup at UFC 154 on Nov. 17 at Montreal's Bell Centre, according to MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani.

Carmont, who trains at Montreal's Tri Star Gym, is 3-0 in the UFC. His most recent victory was a strong second-round submission win over Karlos Veloma. Carmont has won eight straight fights, seven via finish inside of two rounds.

Lawlor (8-4, 1 no-contest), a native of Fall River, MA, is also coming off a highlight-reel performance. He earned knockout of the night honors for his 50-second finish of veteran Jason MacDonald on May 15. Lawlor has won two of his past three fights.

UFC 154 is expected to be headlined by the return of Carmont's Tri Star teammate, welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, in a match with interim champion Carlos Condit.

Ryan Jimmo ties UFC fastest knockout record in debut at UFC 149

After a decorated career with the Canadian promotion MFC, Ryan Jimmo made a memorable UFC debut. He knocked out Anthony Perosh in seven seconds at UFC 149 in Calgary on Saturday.

Light heavyweight Jimmo took two steps in at Perosh before unloading a massive right hand that knocked Perosh right against the fence. He followed up with a strike on the ground, but it wasn't needed. Referee Josh Rosenthal stopped the fight, and Jimmo's win streak was extended to 17.

"I'm very happy, Joe. I'm very happy," Jimmo said to commentator Joe Rogan. "He's a big strong guy, so I went at him."

UFC president Dana White was pleased with Jimmo's debut.

"WOW!!! Ryan Jimmo just tied the fastest KO in UFC history!" White tweeted.

Jimmo is now 17-1 and 1-0 in the UFC. Before fighting with the UFC, Jimmo showed why a fighter shouldn't give up after one loss. He was knocked out in his first fight, but has won 17 bouts since then. Though he was impressive in Canada, Jimmo was only known in the U.S. to the most fervent of fight fans, but now he will be known for a seven-second debut.

Perosh was on a three-fight win streak before ending up on the wrong end of an MMA record. He is now 13-7, and 3-2 in his most recent streak in the UFC.

Breaking Bad

This show is getting so much hype i had to start watching it, i got 5 episodes in and then stopped. Fucks sake its slow, i can appreciate shows that are taking their time, but from episode 3 to 5 there is no progression in the story at all. Just a guy in the basement and thats all. And that eminem sidekick he got sucks.

Is this really as good as everyone is saying, is this worth watching, im sick of movies and i hate wasting time watching tv.

DaMarques Johnson - Raw, Honest, and 100 Percent Cliché-Free

UFC welterweight DaMarques JohnsonA lot of athletes today only speak to the media in clichés. Every question is met with a well-used line about trying hard, giving 110 percent, or working towards the ultimate goal of winning a championship. It’s a back-and-forth that both sides are used to playing, and one that fans have become accustomed to over the years.

Things are a little bit different in mixed martial arts. While there are certainly a collection of tried and true questions and answers out there about training camp, injuries, the next opponent, and the outcome of the next fight, there are numerous fighters who offer a refreshing break from the norm.

DaMarques Johnson is one of those fighters.

The 30-year-old welterweight says what is on his mind, and answers questions with the kind of candidness that you rarely encounter in an athlete who doesn’t punch other people in the face for a living. Even within the fraternity of fighters, Johnson stands as one of the more frank and brutally honest individuals within the group.

While most everyone will tell you they’re taking it one fight at a time and not looking past their next scheduled opponent, most have glanced at the rankings or around the division and formulated an idea about whom they’d like to fight next should they emerge victorious. Not Johnson. Just as he has his own way of answering questions, the man known as “Darkness” doesn’t exactly look at his career in the same way that most of his contemporaries do either.

Coming off a loss, most fighters would talk about the importance of getting back into the win column. Sporting a 4-4 record inside the Octagon since his time as a thorn in the side of Team UK coach Michael Bisping on Season 8 of The Ultimate Fighter, you would think that finding some consistency and stringing together a few wins in order to move up the rankings would be one of Johnson’s foremost concerns. At the very least, it sounds like something most fighters would say if they were in his situation.

“You know, I don’t even think that far ahead,” said Johnson of starting a winning streak next weekend when he welcomes Mike Swick back to the cage after more than two years spent traveling the world while battling injuries and illness. “I’m really just doing what I love to do and taking it at that, because I know I’ve only got X amount of time to do it. I’m just trying to make the best of every single fight. There’s a good possibility that I could have went 8-0 in the UFC, but s**t happens. It’s a learning process as you’re in there, even as you’re getting more and more fights in the UFC.”

Like many, Johnson watched Swick as a member of the inaugural cast of 16 to enter the Ultimate Fighter house, and dreamed of being able to one day follow in the fighter’s footsteps. Next weekend in Los Angeles, the 18-10 Johnson will be locked in a cage with the 14-4 veteran.

Swick last stepped into the Octagon at UFC 109, losing by technical submission to Paulo Thiago when the Brazilian put him to sleep with a D’Arce choke after he was dropped and dazed with a counter left hook. Once a title contender in the welterweight division, it’s hard to know where to place Swick at this point, as he had dropped two straight prior to his extended hiatus. With such a long break between appearances, it could be hard for Johnson to formulate a game plan heading into next weekend’s contest.

That is if Johnson were the type to put together a detailed game plan in the first place.

“Fans and media can talk about game plans all they want, but in the same breath, planning and planning and planning is all well and good, but sometimes you’ve just got to accept the chaos as it comes. That’s kind of the approach I’m taking.

“Of course there are general ideas and places I would prefer the fight be,” he continued, “but that could all change the minute I get punched in the face or I punch him in the face. A lot of it is just going to come down to your will to fight, and I love fighting people. I’m kind of good at it (laughs), so I try not to over-complicate it.”

One thing Johnson wants from all his fights – whether it’s this one, his eight previous UFC appearances, or the bouts hat came before his debut in the Octagon – is a finish, even if he’s the one on the business end of things. The native of West Jordan, Utah has only been to a decision three times in his career, and would prefer that things end without having to go to the scorecards.

“I’ve never, ever been a point-fighter; not in my jiu-jitsu days, not in my fighting career. I don’t see a decision as – I don’t know – I hate decisions. You have to be in there for a long time. Even if you do well, you can still lose, and even if you do horrible, you can get a win that you don’t even feel good about because you’re all lumped up. It sucks.

“I would much rather just get in there, get my ass knocked out, get an arm ripped off or knock someone out or rip their arm off, and there be some finality to it, as opposed to the whole judges rendering decisions thing.”

That’s what he expects from this upcoming encounter with Swick on FOX. Rather than sketch out a picture of how he’ll have his arm raised in victory next Saturday night, Johnson’s assessment of what will happen when the cage door closes is a stripped down vision that’s equal parts refreshing and realistic, and 100 percent cliché-free.

“I’m just preparing for an ass whipping, that’s about it. I’m preparing to get punched in the face, and be in spots to punch him back in the face. That’s really the extent of it for me. Mike Swick definitely has a lot of threats and potential to do bad things to me, and I think I pose the same kind of threats to him.

“I like the matchup; I think he and I are going to put on an amazing fight. There’s a 50 percent chance that I’m going to win this fight, and there’s a 100 percent chance that one of us is going to sleep.”

B.J. Penn: “I’m trying to get up to AKA but Fitch is trying to give me some problems about that.”

When iconic former UFC champion B.J. Penn announced the end of his brief retirement he likely thought the only welterweight he’d be butting heads with in the coming months was UFC 152 opponent Rory MacDonald. However, it looks like “The Prodigy” has found himself in a fight with Jon Fitch as well with the clash coming as a result of Penn’s desire to spend some time training at American Kickboxing Academy.

“I’m trying to get up to AKA but Fitch is trying to give me some problems about that. All Jon Fitch has to do is look on the wall, at whose picture is on the wall holding the belt. That’s all Jon Fitch has to know,” said Penn in the first of a series of video blogs chronicling his preparation for the September scrap with MacDonald.

Though Penn spent time at AKA years ago, the gym has been Fitch’s home-base for the bulk of his career. The two have been rivals since they fought to a Draw in February 2011, spurring a handful of online incidents involving trash-talk. They were supposed to meet in a rematch last year but injuries prevented the pairing from ever coming together.

Penn’s vlog can be found below where he also talks about his decision to undergo VADA testing leading up to UFC 152:

Alexander Gustafsson Going to Get UFC’s Top Dogs

UFC Alexander Gustafsson

If UFC light heavyweight king Jon Jones upholds his 7.5-to-1 odds-on favorite status against Dan Henderson, Alexander Gustafsson (Pictured) will mark the most dangerous 205-pounder remaining who hasn’t had a taste of “Bones.”

While the 25-year-old isn’t necessarily the next in line, UFC president Dana White claimed Gustafsson’s diligently making his way up the totem pole for a tango with Jones. Many believe his range combined with his striking skills could present Jones with problems he’s yet to face in the big leagues.

But first things first, the Swede needs to prove himself against the division’s upper echelon.

“He’s ready for a big fight now, too,” White said during Monday’s conference call. “We’ll get him lined up with one of the top guys soon and we’ll find out where he sits and where he fits.”

“The Mauler” owns a practically perfect 14-1 résumé, with his lone blemish coming against then-undefeated Phil Davis in April 2010. He was last seen posting a unanimous decision win over Thiago Silva in April.

No word on who Gustafsson will face in his next Octagon outing. Perhaps what happens Saturday at “UFC on FOX 4” will provide some clarity.

Jon Jones not thrilled about Mauricio Rua-Brandon Vera being for title-contendership

During a conference call with media on Monday, UFC President Dana White confirmed this weekend’s headlining tilt at UFC on FOX 4 between Mauricio Rua-Brandon Vera would result in one man being named the #1 contender at light heavyweight. However, given the recent records of each man many fans have been left wondering why either would get a crack at one the sport’s most revered championships.

White’s words also caught the attention of current divisional title-holder Jon Jones who didn’t appear to have an explanation for the development either.

“Scratching my head,” wrote Jones on Twitter, clearly confused by the opportunity Saturday night’s winner is being afforded. Jones is set to defend his belt in September against Dan Henderson.

Rua Excited About Possibility of Rematch with Jones

Regarding records, Rua is 1-2 in his last three tilts including a one-sided loss to Jones in March 2011, while Vera holds the same record and was also beaten soundly by “Bones”. Rua also happens to be coming off a loss to Henderson, and Vera’s only victory since August 2009 involved a controversial outpointing of Eliot Marshall.

Matt Riddle wants Dan Hardy for his next bout, but Hardy is not interested

Matt Riddle made a statement both during and after his win over Chris Clements at UFC 149. During the fight, he showed he was ready for tougher competition by countering Clements' spinning backfist with an arm triangle choke that started standing and moved to the ground. At the post-fight press conference, he named that tougher competition: Dan Hardy.

It turns out Riddle had a bad experience when he fought at UFC 105 in Manchester, and he wants to take it out on Hardy.

"I will be completely honest," Riddle said. "When I fought in Manchester, England, (for UFC 105), they were very cruel to me. One fan actually spit directly in my face, and he was lucky enough where it hit my mouth. To be disrespected like that ... for some butter-toothed Brit to spit in my mouth, that was some bull. And honestly it's never been the same."

Though he also said he doesn't have anything against Brits, he does want to take out Hardy. Unfortunately, Hardy already has a fight scheduled with Amir Sadollah at UFC on Fuel 5 in September.

The other hindrance? Hardy doesn't want the bout.

Considering the run of injuries the UFC has experienced, a back-up fight is never a bad idea. Hardy won his last bout after a four-fight losing streak. Riddle won his last two fights. Should this fight happen? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Rory MacDonald joins B.J. Penn in VADA drug testing for UFC 152 showdown

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

MMATorchAvatar2011V2_180_119.jpg
Sticking by his word, UFC welterweight Rory MacDonald will join his UFC 152 opponent B.J. Penn in undergoing random drug testing by the Volunteer Anti-Doping Association ahead of their bout.

VADA announced Penn's participation on Thursday, and in an interview with MMAJunkie.com, MacDonald's manager, Lex McMahon, revealed they were doing the same. Both fighters will be subject to random blood and urine tests for eight weeks leading into their bout, in addition to any testing done by the UFC.

"Our camp is very happy that B.J. has decided to participate in the VADA program that he had put forward," McMahon said. "Rory's completing his paperwork and will be joining him soon, and I think that Rory is definitely excited about the possibilities of what this means for the sport in the big picture, and he's happy he can play a small role in this."

Penn initially balked at VADA's need to release results of the tests immediately, wanting to withhold results until after the fight so as not to affect their booking at UFC 152. That's not how the system works, however, and Penn eventually decided to go ahead with the program as it is. Results of any of the random tests during that time period will be immediately revealed to the ABC, Ontario governing body, and the UFC.

Penick's Analysis: MacDonald and Penn are taking a step in a new direction for testing in the sport. It will be interesting to see how many follow suit and whether or not VADA testing starts to gain a foothold in the sport. It's already resulted in some high-profile busts in boxing, and any fighter signing up for it claiming they're clean better be sure they are, or it's going to lead to the same happening in MMA. Still, as the problems surrounding drug use and abuse in MMA continue to grow, a new approach is needed. VADA being the answer or not is still too early to tell, but it's something more comprehensive than what we're seeing from Athletic commissions with simple pre and post fight urine tests.

Chris Weidman expecting UFC Title fight with Anderson Silva, says he's a "stylistic nightmare" for the champ

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Chris_Weidman_180_2.jpg
Several fighters near the top of the UFC's middleweight division have been getting lined up for fights this fall, but one name who hasn't yet been booked is Chris Weidman. The prevailing thought is that he'll be next in line to face Anderson Silva after destroying Mark Munoz earlier this month, and that's a feeling that Weidman shares.

In an interview with Fighter's Only, Weidman said he believes that fight will be his next, though he made it clear nothing is yet set on that front.

"There's a good chance of it happening," Weidman said of that fight. "Right now we are waiting on a bunch of stuff. I am not gonna say its definite or not, we are waiting to find out. I want him, I have said that, I think I deserve him - I beat two top five guys in a row, no one else has done that. No one else has really stopped a top ten contender either. Everyone I have fought has been tough guys like my first UFC fight was against (Alessio Sakara when he was on a three-fight win streak. He was in his prime and I took that fight with two and a half weeks notice, plus a broke rib, and beat him."

"Then Tom Lawlor who is definitely a tough guy. Submitted him," Weidman continued. "Then Demian Maia - took that fight on ten days notice, cut 32 pounds and he was ranked fifth at the time. I was able to beat him. Then finally I had a full training camp and I was able to take out Munoz who was ranked third. The number one and two guys just fought and I was able to take out number three so its looking good!"

"Every time I have had a full training camp I have finished my opponent and I think the UFC likes that. And if I get the Anderson Silva fight, I am going for the finish."

Of course, Silva's camp has come out and made statements suggesting that they don't buy Weidman as a legitimate title challenger at this stage in his career. Weidman understandably disagrees with that sentiment, and thinks he's proved that he's a viable challenger in the division already.

"There is only so much avoiding you can do so if the UFC wants him to fight me it is going to happen," Weidman said. "Anderson can sell PPV by himself, he is the greatest fighter of all time so it doesn't matter who he is fighting. And they can definitely sell me - I am undefeated, every time I have a full camp I finish my opponent, I finished my last guy in a devastating fashion. Two top five guys in a row. I was living in my parents basement a year and half ago, its almost like the Rocky story that I now have the opportunity to fight for the title. The UFC can definitely make that an interesting story for people."

"When I first got into MMA three years ago I would tell people what weight class I was in and people were like 'whoa, that's Anderson's weight class I hope you never meet him.'" Weidman continued. "Basically looking at me like, 'you have no chance of being champion.' And in the back of my mind I was like, ‘You're wrong!' But I would never say anything because they would think I was crazy."

"And I was a big Anderson fan too, I thought he was awesome, but I wanted to be the guy to dethrone him, and this was three years ago before Anderson had any idea who I am. And now I am in that position to do what I wanted to do - dethrone the best of all time. And now people aren't laughing when I say that."

Weidman believes he's the man to defeat Silva. He's been very impressive thus far against fighters much further down the ladder, but after destroying Munoz, he thinks he presents a challenge Silva hasn't yet faced.

"I think I am stylistic nightmare for him too and you can definitely build that up," Weidman said. "I will give him serious trouble. I am not going in like some other guy just staged, to 'test myself'. I have been competing since I was young and I have made that mistake before, going in to see how I would do against somebody who I thought was good and then fighting out later in the match that 'wow, I can hang with him.'"

"I am done with that type of attitude. I am going in there to beat him. I know I belong in there, I have proved it. I am going in there to finish him. And not just Anderson - every single fight I've had I am in going in there to finish. I would say 90 percent of the guys who got in there withy Anderson have been scared of him. I'm not."

Penick's Analysis: It's looking increasingly likely that Weidman-Silva is going to be on tap next. With Belcher-Belfort and Stann-Bisping already booked for the fall, Weidman doesn't have that type of matchup available to him if this fight falls through or isn't in the works. As it stands, it appears that the matchup is indeed in the cards, though we'll have to see just when Silva wants to return to get a better idea on the timing of the fight. Whether Weidman is ready for that opportunity or not is a question best saved for close to the fight, but it's clear he'd like it to be next.

Scenes from an Underground Fight Show in New York City

Earlier today there was an edition of the Underground Combat League (UCL), New York City's long-running, unsanctioned MMA promotion.  Unlike most of the other states in the country, New York has deemed professional MMA to be illegal.  But a loophole in the law has allowed amateur events to flourish — albeit in a quasi-hush-hush world where fighters sometimes use aliases and the locations of shows are kept secret from the athletic commission.

Please, don't judge them too harshly.  The UCL, for instance, has churned out over forty events since its debut in 2003, and can count among its alumni such fighters as former UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar and International Fight League heavyweight Bryan Vetell (as well as a slew of dudes who went on to fight in Strikeforce, the WEC, Bellator and top regional promotions).  And before you accuse anyone of exploitation, remember this: everyone from promoter Peter Storm to the fighters to the fans wants to see New York State sanction the sport; it's only because New York won't that events like this exist.

You're probably about to ask something along the lines of "Well, don't you think underground shows like this one are setting the sport back and keeping it from being sanctioned?"  That's a clown-question, bro.  The politicians who favor MMA in New York have cited the state's thriving underground fight scene as a reason why the sport must be sanctioned.

Jim Genia always posts live results from these dastardly events here.

New York's 'East River Monster' has animal experts baffled at bizarre find

Is this a monster that washed up on the shores of New York’s East River over the weekend? The carcass of this strange “monster” looked eerily similar to the Montauk Monster that washed up on the shores of Montauk, Long Island last year. What are these strange dead creatures that are hairless and look unlike anything that’s known to walk on land? The debate is on as many today are sharing their theories of the creature's origins.

UFC 149 Post-Fight Press Conference and Fight Night Bonus Recap

Six fighters joined UFC® President Dana White at the UFC® 149 post-fight press conference: Renan Barao, Tim Boetsch, Bryan Caraway, Ryan Jimmo, Matt Riddle, and Urijah Faber.

Riddle won Submission of the Night for his win over Chris Clements. After engaging in an exciting brawl for much of the fight, Riddle used a missed spinning backfist from Clements to secure an arm triangle that forced the tapout.

Jimmo took home Knockout of the Night for his lightning-quick finish of Anthony Perosh. After touching gloves at the beginning of the first round, Jimmo connected with a right hand that immediately put Perosh to sleep. After clocking a mere seven seconds in his Octagon debut, Jimmo earned one of the quickest knockouts in UFC® history.

Fight of the Night went to Caraway and Mitch Gagnon. The two bantamweights engaged in a back-and-forth war which saw Caraway emerge victorious via rear naked choke.

Each bonused fighter received $65,000 for their efforts.

Lombard was robbed.

That fight sucked and Lombard fought like a moron. But honestly, objectively, exactly what did Boetsch land? I can't recall him landing a single strike to the head, and those leg kicks sucked. Lombard should have taken every round.

Heavyweights Travis Browne, Antonio Silva to headline UFC on FX 5 in Minneapolis

Heavyweights Travis Browne and Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva will headline the UFC's return to Minnesota in October.

USA TODAY Sports on Thursday learned from UFC officials that Browne will fight Silva on Oct. 5 in the main event of UFC on FX 5, which will take place at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

Browne on Wednesday was forced off the FOX-broadcast main card of next week's "UFC on FOX 4: Shogun vs. Vera" event. But promotion officials have lessened the blow by rewarding the 6-foot-7 heavyweight his first headlining role.

With Dan Henderson bout looming, UFC Champ Jon Jones driven to break Tito Ortiz's record

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

JonesJones_180_57.jpg
Current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones is inching closer to "best ever" status with every fight, taking out former champions and stiff challenges left and right throughout his time in the UFC. As he approaches his fight with Dan Henderson on Sept. 1 at UFC 151, the 25-year-old Champion has his eyes set on record after record in the UFC.

First up is consecutive title defenses in the 205 lb. division. The record was set by Tito Ortiz in 2002 when he made his fifth straight title defense, and Chuck Liddell came close by defending the title four straight times. Jones has already defended it thrice, besting Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Lyoto Machida, and most recently Rashad Evans, making it four wins in title fights in a 13-month span.

With his bout against Henderson, he can tie Liddell in second place, but his driving goal at the moment is Ortiz's record.

"One of my primary goals right now is to top Tito's record, so that pushes me," Jones said in an interview with MMAJunkie.com. "I'm big on setting goals, and that's one of my goals. DVR also pushes me, too. You get knocked out, that's on TV forever. I know that I have to be at my best."

This bout with Henderson is an interesting contrast in styles. Henderson represents one of the last of the old guard, a supremely talented fighter who is nonetheless a threat in only a couple of aspects in the fight game. His wrestling is very good, and his big right hand is one of the best weapons in the sport period, but there isn't much more nuance or style to his game.

That said, Jones still understands the dangers that Henderson's skillset presents, and it's something he's definitely wary of coming into their bout in Las Vegas.

"I think [I'm most concerned] with his striking, that H-bomb," he said. "He's a very talented fighter. His hands are heat-seeking missiles. He can do some things from all different angles with that right hand."

On the other hand, Jones remains the epitome of what the next generation of the sport may be; his talents are spread far and wide in the game, with a vicious unpredictability to his striking attacks, a great grappling game, surprising submission acumen, and brutal ground and pound skills. When an opponent is good to great in almost every aspect of the sport, it wreaks havoc on preparations, and Jones has proven himself capable of flustering any and all of his opposition.

That's something that Henderson has to be wary of come Sept. 1, and if he can't handle it, Jones will be one fight away from tying Ortiz's record.

Penick's Analysis: Conventional wisdom on the 205 lb. division has the progression clear for Jones' immediate future. A win over Henderson means a likely title defense against Alexander Gustafsson by the end of the year, in which a win would give Jones a share of Ortiz's record. One more title defense in 2013 could set the new benchmark, and subsequently could be when Jones decides to make the move up to the heavyweight division, as the end game seems to be. It's all got to play out still, but he's put himself in a great position to help it along.

Nick Diaz Update: Will Return, Wants Anderson Silva

Like a passing case of the munchies, UFC welterweight contender Nick Diaz's plans to retire seem to have faded, and taking the place of that retirement is a burning desire to face UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva.  All this is according to his longtime coach, Cesar Gracie, who posted a lengthy statement on the matter over at GracieFighter.

It was only just February when Diaz purportedly turned his back on the sport, a move prompted by his controversial unanimous decision loss to Carlos Condit at UFC 143.  The defeat came after a five-round scrap for the UFC Interim Welterweight Championship title, and the bout saw Condit playing "hit and run" while the Stockton native followed him around and hurled insults.  Soon after, it was revealed that Diaz had tested positive for marijuana metabolites in a post-fight urinalysis, and the subsequent year-long suspension levied upon him appeared to be the icing on the retirement cake.

Said Gracie:

For the last couple months I've watched Nick begin to frequent the gym more and more.  He's training harder now than he has for many of his fights.  It was obvious that training and fighting is in his DNA.  It is who he is.

This week we had a great talk and he made it clear to me that he is ready to get back in the cage.  Nick Diaz will return.

With interim champ Condit destined to face UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre at UFC 154 in November, who is there for Diaz - an elite, top-level fighter - to face that's worthwhile?

As far as future opponents, Nick has stated that he would like to take fights "that matter".  Since GSP will be fighting Condit, he has to look elsewhere.  He will respectfully ask for a fight with Anderson Silva, a fighter he respects and would like to challenge.

Silva's camp has been speaking of a fight with GSP, possibly even at a catchweight.  Nick will take that fight in a minute but has told me that should Silva decide not to drop at all, he will move up to 185lbs to face the Champ.

And there you have it.  Unfortunately, unless Diaz (or, more aptly, his attorneys) can figure out a way around his suspension, ain't nothin' going down 'till February, 2013.  Remember kids, dope is for dopes.  Don't be a dope!

Renan Barão - A Deserved Opportunity to Make a Dream Come True

UFC bantamweight Renan BaraoThe sequence of events over the last three months that saw Renan Barao switch opponents twice before moving from UFC 148 to the main event of UFC 149 was stunning, to say the least.

Now, Barão is preparing to battle Urijah Faber on Saturday night for the interim UFC bantamweight belt, but to get here, he went through a lot of different emotions and a surprise after his fight against former WEC title challenger Scott Jorgensen.

Barão (30-1, 1 NC) dispatched Jorgensen by unanimous decision at UFC 143 in February, and his aspirations for a shot at the title were high. Then Jeff Hougland's name was announced as his opponent for UFC 148 in Las Vegas on July 7th, and while the Nova Uniao product was fine with the choice, he was uncertain what this match against the unheralded up and comer was going to do for him in his title quest. Okay, a win is a win, and it doesn't matter against who that victory comes against when you have a winning streak like Barao does, but a fight is a fight, and losing to someone like Hougland, who was only 1-0 in the UFC at the time, would be worse than an upset; it would be catastrophic.

But the MMA world keeps turning, and a succession of changes then shook the bantamweight division. Soon, the UFC was forced to relocate fighters from one event to another to cover for injured fighters who dropped off the cards - and it was announced that Barao would instead face the "Pride of El Salvador", Ivan Menjivar, at UFC 148. However, destiny had a final trick reserved for the man unbeaten in his last 31 fights, as an injury suffered by the 135-pound champion, Dominick Cruz, opened the ultimate door for what Barao never expected three months prior: a fight for the belt. This new situation was so big that Barao couldn't avoid smiling at any moment, even when he had to be in the stare down position inside The Ultimate Fighter training center in Las Vegas against Faber when their bout was announced.

"That's the problem with not talking English too well," he laughed, talking about his trip from Rio de Janeiro to Vegas without knowing the reason for the journey. "I didn't imagine that it would happen so quickly, and Dedé (Andre Pederneiras, Barao’s coach and manager) just said we need to go to USA to resolve some issue. I thought I'd fight one more time and then I would face the winner of Faber-Cruz (if he won the Menjivar fight). So now you all can understand why I couldn't hide the smile in any of the situations that came afterwards."

Talking about it now makes Barao laugh, but at the time, with Pederneiras not telling him the real reason for their sudden trip to Las Vegas, he was concerned, but the shocking news at that moment was turned into pure happiness when he finally found out the answers to his questions.

"My reaction… when I got the point, well man, I think I have no words," he said.  "Inside my body I was smiling much more than I do when I talk about that chance I have now. Look at it this way, we all have dreams, and we know how much time it takes for them to come true. I was looking for this objective for that long, and thank God I'll have this opportunity of showing against Faber the hard work I had put in during my whole career."

There’s no question that he deserves this shot. The man has been perfect during his time under the Zuffa umbrella, with two finishes in the WEC, three great performances in the UFC and the longest winning streak in MMA today. That’s 31 fights without a loss, but fighting Faber for the world bantamweight title is unquestionably the high point of Barao's career and how he handles everything leading up to the match of his life can be a burden. But Barao says it is not this way.

"I'm very relaxed with this winning streak issue; sometimes it's mentioned by my teammates regarding the amount of fights I have won one after other, but I don't think on it," Barao said. "This is a result of the hard work I had during my career, and I'm trying to collect the results of that again with a win on Saturday night and consequently the bantamweight UFC belt.

"My enthusiasm for this chance and the winning streak are things I don't think of at this point; my focus is on Faber and what I can do to beat him, the strategy I'll utilize, things like that. Nothing can harm me now, and because of that I don't turn positive achievements into pressure on my shoulders."

Part of the Nova Uniao team, Barao is teammate to a host of UFC fighters, among then a champion, Jose Aldo, the kingpin of the featherweight division. Aldo isn't just the man at 145 pounds, he is also one of the five men who beat Faber, and many believe that with some adjustments, Barão can have the former WEC featherweight champion's number as well. Is that the way Barao sees it?

"He gained experience and he dropped one weight class since he fought Aldo, so we had some changes here," he said. "Of course Aldo's support is a key point, but I only expect a war, a great fight and I'll bring to the table the best tactics to get this victory."

During those last 90 days prior to the main event of UFC 149, Renan Barao passed through several different emotions, including uncertainty and happiness. But we can't forget that this is a Barao's dream and he wants to make it happen in real life with a happy ending. So he foresees the final result of the match as such:

"Arm raised, belt around my waist and a smile bigger than the one when I found out I would fight for the interim UFC bantamweight belt. That is what I imagined for me and a dream [a mission] accomplished."

Chris Weidman ends Mark Munoz’s title hopes with an elbow at UFC on Fuel 4

Chris Weidman said he wanted to make a statement with his fight against Mark Munoz at UFC on Fuel 4. Mission accomplished, as Weidman knocked out Munoz in the second round of their bout at UFC on Fuel 4.

Weidman started the bout by outwrestling Munoz. He took Munoz down early and kept control of him throughout the round. In the second, Munoz moved in to throw a punch and was met with an elbow to the face. It stunned Munoz, who fell to the ground. Weidman followed him there with several strikes, most of which were unnecessary.

With the win, Weidman makes a good case for a chance at UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva.
