Celeb jiu-jitsu showdown: Ashton Kutcher vs. ‘Al Bundy,’ who wins?

A guy breaks into your home and gets on top of you. Can you find a way to get yourself off the floor?

Here's a shocker. Ed O'Neill of "Al Bundy" fame from "Married with Children" would probably be standing in a matter of seconds and chances are Ashton Kutcher would have no shot of rising to his feet. You ask why? The 61-year-old O'Neill has been training jiu-jitsu for 15 years, meanwhile Kutcher is a novice, who borrowed a black belt, during this recent visit to Brazil.

Black Belt Magazine tells the story that O'Neil, who played a dumpy shoe salesman on FOX's hit television show, got hooked on jiu-jitsu during a quick visit to Rorian Gracie's gym in Torrance, Ca.

O'Neil was pushed by a producer/writer friend John Milius to visit the gym. Gracie put "Al Bundy" through the robber drill and he failed.

Taking the bait, he asked Gracie how he'd managed to maintain complete control (while on top of O'Neil). Once the principle was explained the simplicity of the art floored O'Neil. He set up an appointment to begin training and has been rolling ever since.

Black Belt reports that in 2007, O'Neil received his black belt.

"Ed has a vast knowledge of moves," Gracie said. "He has great execution of the techniques and does them with a certain level of ease. We're worked with this guy every single week for 15 years."

Maybe Kutcher, 33, will have his black belt in 15 years. The photo is from Rio de Janeiro where Kutcher stopped in to visit a Carlson Gracie disciple.

Ashton Kutcher, [was in] yesterday, June 13, [to see] Ricardo de la Riva, in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. Ashton showed that understands the subject and trained very well with the black belts of the academy.

Ashton learned the secret of one of the world's most famous guards, the De la Riva guard, which was demonstrated by the master himself, to the finest detail.

Carwin took a beating, doesn’t remember much of UFC 131

Shane Carwin confirmed what most us already knew. In a one-sided beatdown, he ate a lot of punches from Junior dos Santos at UFC 131.The scary part is Carwin says he doesn't recall parts of the fight.

"I have had a lot of time to reflect on the fight, and while I have not seen it and due to the damage I incurred, I can't recall much of the fight. What I do know is this I am a guy learning how to fight at the elite level," Carwin wrote on his blog. "My heart can't be questioned, I think I showed that I have the cardio to fight at this level and I just need to work on my technique."

Carwin said he knew he was in trouble early in the fight.

"As the fight started, I just did not feel like myself," Carwin said. "I wasn't able to get my feet moving and Junior capitalized quickly. As he was pummeling me I kept trying to find a way to defend myself so [referee Herb Dean] would not stop the fight. Junior was landing solid shots and that is where probably he broke my nose."

Carwin did all he could to make it through the final round and take the fight to a decision.

"After the second round I knew I was in trouble. My nose made it impossible to breathe, my eyes were full of blood and Junior was still coming at me."

Faber nearing the end of the road? The nine-year rule

Competitive mixed martial arts hasn't been around long enough to come up with any definitive theories on length of career, but David Williams at Fight Opinion did a nice job recently of chronicling the career of the some of the biggest stars in the history of the sport. He points out that with few exceptions, no matter when you start your career, the nine-year mark is about when you see a downturn.

Check out these fighters:

CHUCK LIDDELL: MMA debut ? 5/18/98, 9-year mark ? 5/18/07

Liddell's first fight after reaching the 9-year mark was his sudden first-round KO loss to Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. After that, Liddell's only win was against an "older" (by MMA years) fighter in Wanderlei Silva, and he was knocked out in brutal fashion by Rashad Evans, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, and Rich Franklin.

FEDOR EMELIANENKO: MMA debut ? 5/21/00, 9-year mark ? 5/21/09

Emelianenko's first fight after nine years was the Strikeforce match against Brett Rogers, in which Emelianenko was put in more danger than usual. After that, Emelianenko, whose only previous loss was a doctor stoppage due to a cut against Tsuyoshi Kosaka, shockingly lost two fights in a row, to Fabricio Werdum and Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva.

TAKANORI GOMI: MMA debut ? 11/27/98, 9-year mark ? 11/27/07

For Gomi, the fight previous to reaching the 9-year mark was the now infamous war against Nick Diaz that the Nevada State Athletic Commission ruled a No Contest. Since then, Gomi is 5-4 ...

JENS PULVER: MMA debut ? 4/24/99, 9-year mark ? 4/24/08

This is arguably the hardest collapse to watch. Pulver reached the 9-year point of his career prior to his first WEC fight against Urijah Faber. Beginning with that fight, Pulver is 2-7 ...

WANDERLEI SILVA: MMA debut ? 11/1/96, 9-year mark ? 11/1/05

Silva's first two fights after the nine-year mark were wins: a split decision win against Ricardo Arona and a stoppage of Kazuyuki Fujita. After that, Silva is 2-5 ...

Williams also points out Tito Ortiz (debuted May of 1997, 2-4-1 since), Andrei Arlovski (Apr. of 1999, 2-4), Ken Shamrock (Sept. of 1993, 2-8), Mike Brown (Apr. of 2001, 1-3) and Rich Franklin (June of 1999, 3-3) all wilted once their ninth year of fighting started.

He also argues that it's also costly to begin a career before you're 21. Joe Stevenson and Karo Parisyan are two fighters having a tough time surviving and they're both not even 30 yet. Stevenson and Parisyan took their first pro fights at 16. Stevenson, 3-4 since his ninth year began, faces Javier Vasquez this weekend down at featherweight at UFC on Versus 4.

Randy Couture began his career at 34 and was competitive until 47. Can Urijah Faber buck this trend as he gets ready to challenge Dominick Cruz at UFC 132?

Faber, 32, is seven years and 10 months into his career. With advances in nutrition and training, it looks like he can do it. We'll see if the nine-year rule comes up and bites him some time in 2012.

Nate Marquardt Not Medically Cleared, Out of Sunday's UFC on Versus Event

With just over 24 hours to go from the start of UFC on Versus 4, Nate Marquardt has been forced to withdraw from his main event matchup, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to MMA Fighting.

The bout was to be Marquardt's UFC debut at welterweight after 14 starts and a 10-4 record in the promotion's middleweight division. A source with knowledge of the situation said Marquardt believed he would have made weight, but that he did not receive medical clearance from the Pennsylvania state athletic commission. A specific reason for that was not immediately clear, though a Marquardt representative said they may release more information later.

News of Marquardt's withdrawal was first reported by MMAJunkie.com.

As a result of the surprising development, the night's scheduled co-main event, Pat Barry vs. Cheick Kongo, has been moved into the headliner spot.

At least Marquardt's scheduled opponent Rick Story will have a new matchup. Charlie Brenneman, who had his own bout canceled earlier this week after his foe scratched, will step in and face Story.

UFC on Versus 4 takes place at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh.

Older Overeem lacks fighting spirit in loss to Griggs

That's not the way you want to start a high level MMA broadcast. Valentijn Overeem, with a spotty 29-25 record coming in, bailed mentally from his fight against Chad Griggs. Overeem submitted due to strikes at 3:28 of the first round of the first Showtime fight on the Strikeforce card in Dallas.

The American prospect scored a takedown and fell into half guard. Overeem did a nice job of controlling Grigg's left arm. Once "The Grave Digger" freed his arm, he unloaded on Overeem. The older brother of Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem, turned to his side where Griggs pounded away. Seconds later, Overeem tapped to alert referee Kerry Hatley that he'd had enough.

Griggs landed 28 of 40 shots and picked up win No. 3 of his Strikeforce career.

Griggs (11-1) first exploded onto the scene with a 2010 victory over Bobby Lashley. Showtime announcer Mauro Ranallo foreshadowed the happenings when he said Overeem's less than stellar record was due to the fact that he hasn't always handled rough situations well.

Carwin goes with slim look for dos Santos

It had to kill Shane Carwin to watch Cain Velasquez dismantle Brock Lesnar and take the UFC title. Had it not been for stamina issues, the probably should've been Carwin back at UFC 116.

The big man has been gone for a while recovery from back surgery and he's returned with a new look. His face and body are noticeably slimmer. The video above shows off Carwin's new diet with his nutritionist. It's interesting to hear that protein was cut out of the former 285 pounder's diet and stuff like recovery pudding was added.

"People are going to be surprised when they see Shane," Carwin's Brendan Schaub training partner told ESPNRadio1100's "The MMA Insiders" show. "It's the best I've seen him. He's putting things together. His cardio's great and he's more explosive and stronger than ever."

It seems like all the nonsense about the need for another division between 205 and 265 is going by the wayside. Many of the elite heavyweights are fine between 230 and 245 pounds.

Former NHL enforcer Brashear wins MMA debut; Cote wins on same card

It wasn't exactly MMA's finest moment, but Donald Brashear seemed to wow some in the crowd. The 18-year veteran of the NHL crushed Mathieu Bergeron in just 21 seconds in Quebec City on Saturday night.

Brashear, who has a three-fight deal with Ringside MMA , came to the arena with a Philadelphia Flyers bag.

A southpaw, the former Canuck, Flyer, Canadien, Thrasher and Capital, crushed Bergeron with a left and then pounded away on the ground as the last second fill-in turtled up.

Believe it not, the Brashear fight was actually the co-main event on the card. Former UFC middleweight title challenger Patrick Cote won via unanimous decision over Todd Brown in the co-feature. This was Cote's second straight win away from the UFC. He beat Kalib Starnes, another UFC alum, back in April. Cote (15-7) was cut by the promotion after a loss at UFC 121 to Tom Lawlor. A serious knee suffered against Anderson Silva at UFC 90 derailed Cote's career for nearly two years.

You tell us: Are fight nights too long?

Mark Pavelich, the head of Canada's Maximum Fighting Championships, is vexed. He recently noticed how long average MMA events go, and compared them to other major sporting events. Via a press release:

Why is a mixed martial arts fight card an epic production that lasts for hours? Look at our counterparts in other sports:
The average length of an NHL game ? 2:19
The average length of an NBA game ? 2:30
The average length of an MLB game ? 2:47
The average length of an NFL game ? 3:11
Even in the age of multi-million dollar summer blockbuster movies, the average movie now is only 2:09.
Of course it's understood that there is no set time in MMA ? a fight can 15 or 25 minutes or it can be over 45 seconds. But there has to be a solution out there. It's become a mission of mine to find it.

But considering that fans are tuning into not only pay-per-views, but the internet streams of preliminary fights, is this really a concern?

Yes. With so many fight events on the schedule, fight promoters need to be aware of fight fatigue for fans. From the end of May to the first weekend in July, Zuffa has seven events. Add in smaller events like Pavelich's MFC 10 on Friday, Bellator starting up again at the end of the month, and it's just too much to give up so much time to catch every fight.

No. If fans don't want to spend time watching every fight, they don't have to. The addition of Facebook fights are a nice bonus for fans. Not to mention, the comparison doesn't work because of how frequent MLB, NBA and NHL games are, and the NFL takes over a whole day.

TUF 13 Finale weigh-in: Nijem not impressed by Ferguson

Another six-figure UFC contract will be snatched in less than eight hours. Anthony Pettis also has a UFC lightweight title shot on the line. Needless to say, there's a little pressure on several of the participants on tonight's Season 13 "Ultimate Fighter Finale."

Ramsey Nijem is one of the guys under the gun as he faces Tony Ferguson to close out the UFC's reality series. He was joker on the show and was in a similar mood all week. RawVegas caught up with Nijem, who joked around until we asked him if he impressed was by Ferguson (4:00 mark).

All 22 competitors were on the mark during the weigh-in at the Palms in Las Vegas. Clay Harvison's animal head/pelt was impressive, but couldn't match Danny Downes' good luck potato. The lightweight, facing Jeremy Stephens, pulled a potato from his trunks and tossed it into the crowd.

UFC Vet Kurt Pellegrino Insists Retirement 'the Right Choice'

      Filed under:

Kurt Pellegrino surprised many when he announced last week on his website that he was stepping away from MMA, effectively retiring as a fighter. But to those closest to him, it likely didn't come as a surprise at all.

"I've been thinking about retirement since (fighting) Josh Neer (at UFC 101 in August 2009)," Pellegrino told host Ariel Helwani on Monday's edition of "The MMA Hour." "I've been talking to my wife about it since then, anyway. When it was time to do it, I just said, 'Do it now.'"

Pellegrino said he wrote the post on his site, published it, and tried to not look back.

"I wrote this thing all out and pressed send," Pellegrino recalled. "I left my house and drove around for a bit. That was how I dealt with it, because it was a hard thing to do. Do I want to fight again? Right now, I kind of don't."

His initial statement about stepping away left room to return. But Pellegrino (16-6, 7-5 UFC) said Monday it's not likely, and cited missing key moments with his family during his fighting career as a key reason he's liable to keep the gloves on a hanger.

"I'm really happy where I'm at right now in my life. I have no regrets with my decision," Pellegrino said. "Being away, I missed so much of my daughter's life when she was a girl, when she was a baby ... you miss those little things. I probably fed my daughter with a bottle I don't think even 20 times. I felt like a really bad father. A lot of guys that fight I think care a lot more about traveling and being away from their families than being with them. And I'd rather be with them."

Pellegrino and his wife also have a new baby boy to go with their daughter.

Pellegrino was on a four-fight winning streak in the UFC before dropping a unanimous decision to George Sotiropoulos at UFC 116 last July. He followed that with a split decision loss to Gleison Tibau in his home state of New Jersey at UFC 128 in March. During his four-fight streak, he won UFC bonuses for a Fight of the Night against Thiago Tavares at UFC 88 and Submission of the Night against Fabricio Camoes at UFC 111 - and in that fight, he also injured his knee. But he trained anyway, refusing to pull out of his fight with Sotiropoulos just over three months later.

But for that fight, Pellegrino said the doubts about his future in the sport began to enter his mind. "In my mind, I didn't care if I got my hand raised," Pellegrino said. "When that started happening, I didn't want to be a part of the sport anymore. If I was 100 percent Kurt, I would've been able to beat (Sotiropoulos)."

Pellegrino said the UFC, specifically matchmaker Joe Silva, understood his position and released him from his contract. He also said Silva sensed it might be coming at his last fight against Tibau, and Pellegrino let his wife in on it at that time, too.

"Talking with Joe, he said, 'I don't see the fire in you, buddy,'" Pellegrino recalled. "My wife, I told her before the weigh-ins, 'I don't wanna do this no more.' Thirteen years I've been with my wife, and it's been 13 years of Kurt Pellegrino. It's time to be a part of their lives a little bit, too."

For now, Pellegrino said he will stay plenty busy with the school he runs, where he teaches all the jiu-jitsu classes. And he said every Tuesday and Thursday, he'll be home to be with his kids while his wife runs the spray-tan business he purchased for her.

But regrets? Pellegrino said he won't have any - yet.

"I told my father and wife when I was 30, I'd never, ever compete again," said Pellegrino, who is now 32. "I've been wrestling since I was 5 years old. I've been cutting weight since I was 12. I got to (fight in the UFC) 12 times and win Fight of the Night honors. ... Most (fighters) live and die just for the life - I could care less.

"This is the right choice for my life right now. I kind of need to go find myself a little bit."

TUF 13 Finale odds: Ferguson motivated by being the underdog

By the end of the season on "The Ultimate Fighter," Tony Ferguson felt like it was one against 13. During a drunken rant, Ferguson managed to have most of the TUF house turn on him including his own Team Lesnar teammates. He got through that experience so it was no surprise to see his reaction today when he was told Las Vegas sportsbooks has tabbed him the underdog in Saturday's TUF 13 Finale against Ramsey Nijem.

"I always want to be the underdog," Ferguson said today during the TUF 13 workouts at the Palms in Las Vegas. "This is my time. I've been putting in my time day in and day out. I've had those office cubicles where everyone hates it, and nobody wants it ? but nobody really does anything. They just settle for it. I don't want to settle. This is exactly where I need to be. This is what I deserve, and I need to be the next Ultimate Fighter."

Considering Ferguson's performances on the show, it was a little surprising to see Nijem listed as the minus-155 favorite.

Ferguson won all three of his fights via finish. Ferguson knocked out Justin Edwards with a first-round upkick and punched out Ryan McGillivray just 46 seconds into their fight. In the semis, it took a little over three rounds, but Ferguson finished Chuck O'Neil via strikes as well.

When Cagewriter mentioned how impressive Ferguson was, Nijem simply shrugged. He said Edwards was winning the first fight when Ferguson got off a lucky kick and that McGillivray had a concussion going into the second fight. He also said O'Neil broke in the other fight as a result of fighting four times in a short period.

Neither fighter lacks confidence. That's for sure. We'll see how the betting public reacts. TUF events are not easy to bet. Limited fight action and overall footage from a reality show aren't the most reliable tools to use when handicapping a match.

TUF 13 betting odds (Courtesy Lagasse's Stadium Las Vegas):

Clay Guida (+140) vs. Anthony Pettis (-170) - Lightweight

Tony Ferguson (+120) vs. Ramsey Nijem (-155) - Welterweight

Fabio Maldonado (+150) vs. Kyle Kingsbury (-180) - Light heavyweight

Ed Herman (-105) vs. Tim Credeur (-125) - Middleweight

      Chris Cope (+170) vs. Chuck O'Neil (-200) - Welterweight

Danny Downes (+240) vs. Jeremy Stephens (-320) - Lightweight

George Roop (+300) vs. Josh Grispi (-400) - Featherweight

Ken Stone (+325) vs. Scott Jorgensen (-450) - Bantamweight

Francisco Rivera (+155) vs. Reuben Duran (-185) - Bantamweight

Clay Harvison (+130) vs. Justin Edwards (-160) - Welterweight

      Ryan McGillivary (+220) v. Shamar Bailey (-300) - Welterweight

Ferguson wins “The Ultimate Fighter” with Nijem knockout

Tony Ferguson won the 13th season of "The Ultimate Fighter" with an impressive knockout of Ramsey Nijem in Las Vegas on Saturday night. In addition to winning a six-figure contract with the UFC, Ferguson also won the Knockout of the Night, earning a $40,000 bonus.

Nijem came out swinging in the first round, but Ferguson quickly answered with a takedown. After Ferguson wasn't able to do much with the ground position, Nijem rolled through to get back to his feet. The two traded punches until Ferguson caught Nijem with a right then a left hook. Nijem fell to the ground, and Ferguson finished him off with one more strike. The fight was stopped at 3:54.

Ferguson was surprised as he watched the replay of the round with UFC commentator Joe Rogan.

"I don't remember even throwing that," he said.

Ferguson played the role of the villain this season, drawing the ire of castmates on a drunken evening when he said several remarks that his teammates felt crossed the line.

"I learned about myself in there," Ferguson said about living in the house. "I brought a lot of demons in with me there, but from here on out I want to do the right thing."

UFC helps amateur shows grow: Tuff-N-Uff in bigger arena tonight in Vegas

Memorial Day weekend is jammed with parties and concerts in Las Vegas. UFC 130 is certainly the biggest sporting event in town, but it's not the only MMA going down. One of the best amateur shows in the country has outgrown its old digs and moved to a bigger arena. Tuff-N-Uff takes place tonight at the 3,500 seat Cox Pavilion.

The card is headlined by Frank Mir's cousin Larry Mir, who's facing Chis Barden. Mir realizes the significance of the amateur show moving to a larger venue.

"It is such a huge honor to be able to fight where Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar had their fight [at the first Ultimate Fighter finale]. They speak so much about how that fight put MMA in the mainstream," Mir told the Las Vegas Sun. "It's such a big honor to be able to fight where the greats have fought."

The weigh-ins for the card took place yesterday at the Sky Combat Ace hangar where Randy and Ryan Couture were on hand along with TUF 7 champ Amir Sadollah.

The fight card starts at 7 p.m. PT. Yahoo! Sports lead MMA writer and myself will be on hand doing our ESPNRadio1100 "The MMA Insiders" show from 6-7 p.m. Come by and say hi, or listen here. Tonight's guest include Anthony Pettis and Brendan Schaub.
