Hominick fighting for title shot, Roop isn't; Is that fair?

Mark Hominick is just over a day away from the second biggest fight of his life. If he downs George Roop at Fight for the Troops 2, Hominick gets a shot at the biggest fight of his career, a title shot against Jose Aldo, the UFC featherweight champ. Roop's situation is different. Even with a win, there is no title shot. Essentially this is just another fight ... for now.

MMA fans have grown accustomed to title eliminators, so why switch the approach? Roop is the guy who could be complaining, but he's not. He understands the reality of the 145-pound division.

"I don't take it too much as disrespect," Roop told MMAjunkie radio. "I understand he's the No. 1 contender, and if he can get past me – (and that's) a big 'can' with a question mark on it – I do think he deserves it."

Hominick, 28, has been long regarded as a possible title contender. His striking is top notch and he's shored up most of his weaknesses on the ground. The Canadian has won four straight, but you could make the argument that Roop's recent opponents have actually been more impressive that the guy line for a title shot.

"But if you look at the caliber of fighters I've been fighting – (former champ) Eddie Wineland, (Leonard) Garcia on a week-and-a-half's notice, and Chan Sung Jung, who (supposedly) couldn't be knocked out – I fought top-caliber guys, and I step up and take fights."

Roop knows he can't talk himself into a title shot before the fight, but he does control his own destiny tomorrow night. A devastating win on Spike TV may force the promotion's hand. If offered Aldo, he won't shy away from the fight.

"It's a big deal, and I think Mark deserves it if he gets past me. But that's a big if," Roop said. "I don't plan on losing this fight. It'd be nice for me to fight Jose Aldo, as well. We'll see how Jan. 22 plays out."

This is actually a return to the UFC for Hominick (19-8). A relatively small 145 pounder, he actually fought twice for the promotion as a lightweight back in 2006. He went 2-0 against Jorge Gurgel and Yves Edwards.

Roop has an example to follow. Josh Grispi was the last guy fighting for his shot at Aldo. The 23-year-old was beaten soundly by Dustin Poirier at UFC 125. He's also accustomed to being the underdog. Roop knocked off Internet sensation and T-shirt maven, Chan Sung Jung, "The Korean Zombie" in his last fight.

Will UFC 129 break attendance records?

The UFC announced that tickets will go on sale on Feb. 12 for their first Toronto event, UFC 129 at the Rogers Centre. Tickets will range from $50-800, and approximately 42,000 tickets will be available for sale. That's nearly double the attendance that the UFC has ever gotten for an event.

The deck is stacked for a big event. Canada's favorite son, Georges St. Pierre will fight Jake Shields on the main event. Jose Aldo will put his belt on the line against Mark Hominick, and Randy Couture, always a draw, will fight Lyoto Machida. Plus, it's the first time the UFC willl be in Toronto.

Canada is traditionally a boon for the UFC. Most recently, UFC 124 in Montreal broke the North American attendance record. With GSP as the main event fighter, they pulled in 23,152 attendees.

Trevor Forever...

This morning was grand. When I woke, the full moon was setting over this ridgelline. Moments later the sun came up and there was a solid hour of alpenglow. I thought to myself: "I'm going to go shred that run today."

The run is called Trevor Forever and it is located at Baldface Lodge in British Columbia. With a SnoCat at my direction, it happened as planned. A few runs into the day and ... bliss.

Movie critic gets the 'creeps' seeing kids try MMA, Jason Statham disagrees

The UFC can hold all the press conferences it wants, but there's still going to be that element of potential critics who have their pre-conceived notions about mixed martial arts.

Mark down movie critic Jeffrey Lyons as an opponent. The longtime movie guru in the New York area asked actor Jason Statham if there should be a minimum age for kids to train in MMA. Statham, a fan and student of MMA, intelligently shot him down.

It's not just Lyons. Check out the comment thread on this TapouT-Ruffo brothers commercial. There's lots of folks around the world who are still in the dark on MMA.

TUF 13 media day: dos Santos drops the hammer, says Lesnar can't take a good punch

This season of "The Ultimate Fighter" is going to be all about coaching the prospects, right? Those were the words of Brock Lesnar on Tuesday in Las Vegas. You get the feeling once the cameras are rolling and Lesnar is fed a few lines from Camp dos Santos, his singular focus may change.

Lesnar hasn't had to publicly answer many questions about his loss against Cain Velasquez. It was clear that night that the big guy doesn't like getting hit. Once Velasquez landed a few good punches, Lesnar was on his horse, nearly sprinting from a striking battle.

Dos Santos told the media during the Season 13 media day that Lesnar can't take a punch. From the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

"He doesn't accept punches well. I am from boxing, so I have no problem with punches. Guys can punch me and I feel nothing, just keep going. That doesn't happen with him," dos Santos said with a characteristic smile. "I don't know why, I guess he's got a weak chin."

It was surprising for the normally reserved dos Santos to state it so bluntly. He also believes Lesnar is going down again.

"I believe I can knock him out."

Dos Santos is 12-1, including 6-0 with the UFC. He's one of the better strikers in the heavyweight division with five of those UFC victories coming by TKO or KO. Lesnar (5-2 with UFC) has his work cut out for him and should get plenty of motivation if JDS continues to speak his mind.

Mark Hominick Whips George Roop, Earns Shot at Jose Aldo

by Michael David SmithMark Hominick earned a shot at the UFC featherweight title with a win over George Roop at Saturday's UFC Fight for the Troops 2, putting on a very impressive striking display and establishing himself as the No. 1 contender to the 145-pound king, Jose Aldo.

Hominick leveled Roop with a big right hand to the chin within the first minute of the first round, and although Roop quickly got back up, he appeared off balance and not all there. Hominick kept battering away at Roop's head and knocking him down repeatedly, and it wasn't long before the referee stepped in to stop the fight, giving Hominick a TKO victory at 1:28 of the first round.

Training at Jackson's, Jones adopts the Diego Sanchez cartwheel

We didn't intend for today to be Jon Jones day, but this video from the Jackson's MMA Twitter feed was too fun not to share. Watch the first minute to catch Jones' tumbling skills.

Learning from campmate Diego Sanchez, Jones has adopted the "YES! Cartwheel" and turned it into the "YEAH! Cartwheel." Sanchez, a confirmed bag of crazy, has added to his psychotic persona by shaving his head, and he is still wearing his jersey from the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter."

A bit of training news is dropped at the end of the video: Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix participant Andrei Arlovski is working with Jackson's camp to prepare. He sparred with Rashad Evans, who is getting ready for his title bout with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

Five fights to help you beat the winter blues

It's that time of year. The time when the holidays are over, the credit card bills are filling your mailbox and the snow has turned from a pretty white blanket to gray slush. What will help you through the long winter? People pummeling each other, of course! Here are five to savor before the vernal equinox on March 20.

Jan. 29, Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg -- Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza vs. Robbie Lawler: Brawler vs. grappler. Striking vs. submissions. Gritty vs. smooth. This match-up for the Strikeforce middleweight belt matches up different styles of MMA: the heavy hands of Lawler agains the submission genius of Souza. Though Jacare has showed improved stand-up in his last two fights

Feb. 5, UFC 126 -- Miguel Torres vs. Antonio Banuelos: After constantly bringing exciting fights to the WEC, Torres and Banuelos will bring the bantamweight brand to the UFC. There is about 0.0005% chance that this fight will not be exciting. Not to mention, does an epic mustache win out over an epic mullet? We'll find out.

Feb. 12, Strikeforce and M-1 Global -- Fedor Emelianenko vs. Antonio Silva: So many questions will be answered in this bout in New Jersey. How will Fedor rebound from his loss to Fabricio Werdum? Will the long layoff affect him? What will be Fedor's answer to Silva's size? Will the Russian guy who got away from Chrissie Moltisanti and Paulie "Walnuts" be there to cheer on Fedor?

Mar. 5, Strikeforce -- Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum: He's made history fighting everywhere but Strikeforce, but will he Overeem able to get past the Fedor-slayer to get through the first round of the Strikeforce heavyweight tournament, defending his belt along the way?

Mar. 19, UFC 128 -- Edson Barboza vs. Anthony Njokuani: My legs hurt just thinking about this bout. Barboza won his UFC debut by piling up leg kicks on Mike Lullo. Njokuani has elbows and head kicks that can end fights. Don't expect this bout to last long or to be boring.

What fights are you looking forward to in the cold, winter months?

Like the UFC on Facebook and you'll get two free fights

The UFC just wants you to like them. Literally -- if you "like" them on Facebook, then you'll get to stream two preliminary fights from this weekend's "Fight for the Troops."

Head to the UFC's fan page, click on the "like" button, and then you can watch Cody McKenzie take on Yves Edwards in a fight that McKenzie promises to finish, and also watch DaMarques Johnson face Mike "Joker" Guymon for free. To the press release:

“I’m always looking for ways to give fans fights for free and this is just another example of that,” UFC President Dana White said. “Facebook is such a great tool for people to stay connected and we’re excited to put two live fights on our UFC page for free.”

Those fights will happen before the rest of the card -- headlined by Evan Dunham vs. Melvin Guilard and Tim Hague vs. Matt Mitrione -- airs on Spike TV for the cost of basic cable.

While you're at Facebook, check out the Cagewriter Facebook page. We can't give you any free fights, but hey, we were nice enough to tell you about it, right?

UFC pulls rabbit out of the hat with TUF 13 'Lesnar vs. dos Santos'

The UFC looked like it was backed into a corner for Season 13 of "The Ultimate Fighter." The bantamweights weren't an option. Chael Sonnen's away-from-the-Octagon nonsense dashed the plan of having him coach against Wanderlei Silva.

What was left?

It was pointed out earlier in the day that Brock Lesnar made sense, but could Dana White get the cranky former champ to spend seven weeks in Las Vegas? Not only did White pull off the coup of Lesnar on TUF 13, he also got Junior dos Santos as the other coach.

Lesnar and dos Santos will hit the ground in Las Vegas some time in the next two weeks to begin taping for TUF 13. They'll oversee a crew of welterweights.

The TUF 13 Finale comes on June 4 in Las Vegas. Lesnar and JDS will meet shortly after that on a pay-per-view card in June. White said everything came together when Velasquez went down for 6-to-8 months because of shoulder surgery.

"There were a lot of people we were looking at, and then, boom. Cain Velasquez gets hurt," White said. "And I was literally driving to work one morning and I said, 'You know what? This makes sense. Let's see if we can do this.'"

White hinted that getting Lesnar to commit to what will turn out to be a massive time commitment wasn't easy. He also knows the work of managing the big guy's mood has just begun.

"I'm already prepared mentally – it's going to be a tough season," White said. "I deal with Brock in very short spurts. The guy fights two to three times a year, and it's always tough. It's going to be an interesting six weeks of filming. ... (Brock) is not exactly a happy-go-lucky guy. Who knows what's going to happen this season. I do know it's going to be very interesting to see."

White told the media today that the deal was finalized about 10 days ago. He was thrilled to see all the speculation especially in regards to Lesnar's hunger to fight on after his rough loss to Velasquez. Lesnar has a chance to prove he can take a punch without turning and running. JDS is one of the top strikers in the world at heavyweight. The winner of their fight is slated to meet Velasquez upon his return.

Ten Kate Honda officially became Castrol Honda at the 2011 launch of the team in the UK today. Though Jonathan Rea and Ruben Xaus were confirmed as riders in November 2010, the return of a Castrol Honda team to World Superbike was kept pretty well under wraps until today’s launch. UFC Will Stream Fights on Facebook

by Michael David SmithThe UFC has announced that two fights on the non-televised portion of Saturday night's Fight for the Troops event will be streamed live on the promotion's official Facebook page.

"I'm always looking for ways to give fans fights for free and this is just another example of that," UFC President Dana White said in a statement. "Facebook is such a great tool for people to stay connected and we're excited to put two live fights on our UFC page for free."

The UFC, more than any other sports league, has used social networking to connect to fans. So from that perspective, it's easy to see why they'd do this Facebook deal. But the deal still seems a little weird.

2011 Moto2 Line Up - Corti, Cardus, De Rosa, Debise Confirmed, Pesek Out

As the new year approaches, the Moto2 grid is starting to near completion - though the sudden withdrawal of the Promo Racing / Jack& Jones by Antonio Banderas racing team is a reminder that the grid is only final once the lights go out at Qatar. Over the past couple of weeks, several signings have seen a few of the remaining blank spaces in the rider list fill out, and bringing the grid back up to 39.

The first announcement came from the Italtrans Team, who announced the signing of Italian rider Claudio Corti. Corti had spent 2010 racing alongside Jules Cluzel at Forward Racing, but had been edged aside to make room for Alex Baldolini. Corti now switches to the team that fielded Roby Rolfo and Robertino Pietri for 2010, and will remain aboard a Suter. Rolfo has departed Moto2 altogether, and will be riding the ill-fated Pedercini Kawasaki in World Superbikes, while Pietri is yet to sign a deal in either Moto2 or the AMA, where he raced previously.

The Tuenti Speed Up team announced that they had added Valentin Debise to their line up, signing the Frenchman to run alongside the Spanish prodigy Pol Espargaro. The Speed Up Team will once again be fielding FTR machinery, though this time, under the FTR name, rather than rebadged as a Speed Up, as was the case when Andrea Iannone and Gabor Talmacsi raced for the team last season.

Local Hero Peggy Oki

We're thrilled to hear that Peggy Oki has been named as a "Local Hero" by the Santa Barbara Independent (scroll halfway down the page to see Peggy!).

Peggy has more than earned this honor with her inspiring & enduring support for protecting cetaceans and ocean life, through her Origami Whales Project… An international campaign, aimed at getting the message across to the International Whaling Commission (IWC), to put a stop to the slaughter of whales and the cruelty of commercial whaling in Japan, Norway and Iceland.

White changes script: Edgar-Maynard 3 comes before Pettis gets his shot

At WEC 53, Anthony Pettis, a winner over WEC lightweight champ Ben Henderson, was guaranteed the next fight against the winner of Frank Edgar and Gray Maynard. There were two problems after Edgar and Maynard fought to a draw at UFC 125 earlier this evening - there was no winner and Dana White didn't have the heart to tell Maynard he wouldn't be getting an immediate rematch.

"I hate to talk about what we're going to do with future fights at a press conference when a card has just ended," White told Yahoo!'s Kevin Iole.

"I had the whole Pettis thing with the belt on my mind and so I said, 'Yeah, Pettis gets the next shot.' But then when I thought about it more, how can I in good conscience not give that shot to Gray Maynard? It's a no-brainer. He came in there and he fought his ass off and he deserves that rematch. That was a great fight and they deserve to do it again."

Shortly after the decision was announced, some MMA bloggers were dismayed after seeing a tweet @UFC that Pettis was getting his fight against Edgar over a immediate rematch.

It's a rough break for Pettis, who pulled off one of the nicest kicks in MMA history to seal his win in the fifth round against Henderson.

The three judges were split on the decision. Glenn Trowbridge gave it 48-46 to Frank Edgar, Marcos Rosales had it 48-46 for Maynard while Patricia Morse-Jarman scored the fight a draw. White said he also scored it a draw.

Triple Crown of Surfing Art

Surf comps over the past few years have been increasingly using surf art in their contest marketing materials, Billabong, Roxy and Vans seem to particularly like surf art (good on 'em!). The Triple Crown of Surfing has used surf art for years, with this years umbrella event artwork done by artist Chris Lundy (below), and below that are this years six competition posters…

What is the Triple Crown of Surfing?

If you weren't aware, there is a surfing event going on in Hawaii called the Triple Crown of Surfing, one the most prestigious of all surfing contests. The event spans 6 surfing comps with a holding period from November 12th through to December 20th. Right now is the Pipeline Masters (awesome!). The best Hawaiian local surfers take on the professional surfers from around the globe, in arguably the best waves on the planet.
