Surfploytation by Damian Fulton

Brand new work by Damian Fulton on show at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in LA, California from July 2 - August 1, 2010

Damian Fulton is fascinated by the dichotomy and duality of Los Angeles seaside culture. The proximity of one of the world's most diverse and congested cities to the Pacific coast provides fertile material for Damian's dark take on the California dream. Perhaps it's in the water.

Surfploytation continues Damian's twisted ride down PCH where Surf City is way more Gotham than groovy. Car chases, girls with guns, noir nostalgia, a visual narrative that reads like conceptual art for a fictional Surfploytation movie. For this show, experimentation with new materials native to his environment, balsa wood and fiberglass, skate decks, and surfboard fins, have this new work amped up to 11.

Before focusing on his own vision, Damian helped, Disneyland, Marvel Productions, and various magazines find theirs.

MMA talk hits national airwaves on a football Monday! Rome mocks Sonnen

Monday's Jim Rome show was another example of "be careful what you wish for MMA" when it comes to media coverage. Now that more media big boys are on board, they'll often latch onto the negative stories before the positive ones. It was a bit shocking to hear the national radio host talking MMA on a Monday that didn't follow a fight card weekend, but the Chael Sonnen saga was simply too good for Rome to pass up.

The Premiere Radio and ESPN television host became very familiar with Sonnen right before UFC 117. Rome did a nice job of pressing Sonnen on his over-the-top comments about Lance Armstrong cheating, taking steroids and "giving himself cancer." Sonnen denied making the comments and then denied it again even upon hearing the audio. He was an easy punching bag on Monday when Rome discovered that the fighter himself tested positive for performance enhancing drugs.

Rome did bring up a good point. In the end, are there really any long-range repercussions for the sport? Will Sonnen getting nabbed scare anybody? Rome says no, because the penalties can never match the potential windfall from taking PED's, winning and moving up the rankings.

Rome also found time to play some drops (5:45 mark) from Sonnen's Q&A last week at Ultimate Fight Night 22. Sonnen said he'd like to stab Brock Lesnar (video -- 5:25 mark). At least he's got no worries about any disciplinary action for that stupid comment; Sonnen more than overshadowed it with his positive test.

More details are slowly trickling in about the drug-test results in California. Sonnen is looking at a year suspension and minimum fine of $2,500. George Dodd from the California State Athletic Commission told SI.com's Josh Gross that Sonnen admitted before the Anderson Silva fight that he'd taken something.

"He only indicated that he was taking it but he never indicated why," Dodd said. "[Sonnen] just let me know he was taking [something] and that's when I called over an inspector to get it documented. But when you do take it you still have to show a medical reason."

Sonnen's urine sample first tested positive on Sept. 2. A second test was done at UCLA's Olympic Drug Testing lab and produced the same result.

The scheduled February rematch between Sonnen and Silva appears unlikely. Unless he wins an appeal, Sonnen's suspension will run through Sept. 2, 2011.

In a press release, the UFC stated that the Yushin Okami-Vitor Belfort fight at UFC 122 is now a No. 1 contender fight in the middleweight division.

Thanks to The Jim Rome Show and FoxSportsRadio920 for the audio

Will Randy Couture Fight Again? His Lawyer Casts Doubt

Randy CoutureIn the midst of a three-match win streak as well as a Hollywood career that is quickly generating momentum, multi-time UFC champion Randy Couture could soon be faced with a decision between his two professional worlds.

The legend's enviable future dilemma was best exhibited during the month of August. On the 13th, Couture helped open Sylvester Stallone's "The Expendables" to the No. 1 spot in the US box office. To date, the film has made over $100 million domestically and around a quarter-billion dollars worldwide. Then, on the 28th, he moved back to the realm that made him famous, and submitted boxer-turned-mixed martial artist James Toney in a bout that received major mainstream media buzz.

So what's next for the 47-year-old Couture? Though no firm offers have been made and nothing has been set in stone, both the UFC and Hollywood remain viable options.

Japanese promoters continue to mess with Ishii's career; he fights Saturday

Maybe Satoshi Ishii had no intent of being a real mixed martial artist. Aside from nationalistic loyalty and some big paydays, he did himself zero favors by spurning the UFC's offer back in 2009 to sign with Sengoku of Japan. The much-celebrated judo gold medalist from the 2008 Olympics decided to start his MMA career in Japan and it's been a mess ever since. He made his debut against Hidehiko Yoshida, a 16-fight veteran and fought only one more time since that loss. Now you can add one more silly fight to the story. DREAM announced Wednesday that Ishii will face Ikuhisa Minowa this Saturday.

Fight Opinion suggests that it's simply a money grab by DREAM, which is having difficulty with its Japanese television deal. "Minowaman" is a favorite of Japanese fans, but frankly he's kind of a sideshow. The 34-year-old is 46-30-8 in his career and is generally matched up against much bigger opponents.

There's been talk of the 230-pound Ishii dropping to light heavyweight so it'll be interesting to see how much bigger he is than the 187-pound Minowa. He is a savvy fighter who's won five straight against the likes of Hong Man Choi, Bob Sapp, Imani Lee, Rameau Thierry Sokoujdou and Jimmy Ambriz.

The fight makes little sense in the progression of Ishii's career. What's the point of once again putting him at risk to benefit a one-time ticket dash? Sengoku already did it once with the Yoshida fight

The Ishii-Minowaman fight highlights a pretty solid card featuring Gegard Mousasi, Jason Miller, Joachim Hansen and Shinya Aoki.

Dwarf looks to make it as a pro MMA fighter

There are some shorter guys fighting in the bantamweight division. And even more may be on the way when WEC adds a 125-pound division, but a dwarf fighting professionally is something we've never seen on the big stage. Tyler Freeland wants to be the first little person to break through and make a living fighting. Just 5-foot tall, Freeland is seen here sparring with MMA blogger Aaron Tru. He looks to have some skills after logging 21 amateur fights.

"Growing up sucked. I'd get picked on and made fun of all my life," said Freeland, who tried wrestling in high school to channel his aggression. Now he's moved to Las Vegas to work on MMA with Shawn Tompkins and his crew at the TapouT Training Center.

Freeland has hypochondroplasia and never got taller than his current height. He shouldn't have problems finding fights down at 145 pounds, but he does face certain challenges. His limited reach makes striking difficult and as you can see in this fight video from 2009, he's especially susceptible to submissions when sitting in someone's guard. On the positive side, he'll be a tough guy to defend the takedown against. Either way, it's a nice story to follow and gives little people a role model.

The UFC and roids: Dana White says he's not the boss, the government is

Dana White finally got to vent about Chael Sonnen's positive drug test and one-year suspension handed down by the California State Athletic Commission. He's not happy with the criticism lobbed his way. Some fans and MMA bloggers think it's time for White to put his foot down about steroids in the sport. White said he's not the guy who makes the decisions, it's the state commissions.

"The commission could give a flying rat's ass about what I think," White told the media gathered at the UFC 119 prefight presser. "They oversee me! They tell me what I'm going to do."

White said stop comparing him to guys like NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and NBA commissioner David Stern.

"People say you're the commissioner of the sport. Here's the reality, the government tells my fighters what's going to happen to them," said White. "The big misconception that Dana White runs the athletic commissions couldn't be further from the truth so I have to sit back now and see what happens with Chael Sonnen."

White told Ariel Helwani of mmafighting.com that there's a lot more to the Sonnen story and that we all need to wait until the appeal is heard by the California State Athletic Commission. But he did state that Sonnen has always been a standup guy and reiterated what he told Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole last week. White said various commission's penalties are severe enough. White doesn't want to pile on fighters who violate drug rules. But he did take time to point out the difference between violators like Chael Sonnen and former UFC heavyweight champ Josh Barnett.

"People are all going to make mistakes. I judge you by how you react to the mistakes you make," said White. "There's guys out there like Josh Barnett. Josh Barnett tested positive three times and this guy denies it every time. Everybody's a liar but him. I just saw an interview he did where he said he could really give a [expletive] about anybody else but himself. And that's why Josh Barnett isn't and will never be in the UFC. This isn't the kind of guy that I respect or want to do business with."

Barnett recently signed a deal with Strikeforce. He tested positive in 2002 after UFC 36 and was stripped of his title. He also tested positive in 2009 before a scheduled fight for Affliction against Fedor Emelianenko.

Massouh and Cooper win at Bellator in Milwaukee

Jameel Massouh and Brett Cooper both are walking away from Bellator in Milwaukee with wins after both finished their opponents on Thursday night.

After a back and forth round, Mamalis picked up Massouh for a takedown, which turned out to be a mistake. Massouh jumped guard and grabbed a tight guillotine. Mamalis lasted for as long as he could, but tapped out at 4:27 in the first round.

Massouh, a WEC veteran, filled in at the last minute on Bellator's televised card, facing Mamalis, who lost on in early September in Bellator's bantamweight tournament.  Brett Cooper was impressive in the first televised fight at Bellator in Milwaukee on Thursday.

Cooper starts televised card with TKO

Brett Cooper turned around quickly from his tournament loss with a TKO at Bellator. He used his wrestling to control Matt Major off in the first round, then finished him off in the second.

Early in the second round, Cooper took Major to the ground then followed up with vicious ground and pound. The referee called the fight at 1:27 of the second round for Cooper.

Twenty large may get Dana White to follow you on Twitter!

UFC president Dana White is part of TwitChange. The Twitter charity effort began taking bids on Wednesday. The highest bidder on dozens of celebrity Twitter accounts will be rewarded by having their celeb follow them for 90 days. All the proceeds go to the efforts to build a home and school for Special Needs kids in Haiti.

All proceeds from the TwitChange celebrity auction will provide aHomeInHaiti.org the means to ?nish rebuilding the Miriam Center. The Miriam Center houses, educates and loves on Haitian children with cerebral palsy, severe autism, and other major life challenges and is one of the only facilities of its kind in Haiti. The current facility houses children in the earthquake?s aftermath and is extremely overcrowed. These kids need and deserve a permanent home.

@danawhite's megapack is currently $11,100 (as of Thursday night, 10 p.m. PT).

The Cagewriter budget is huge so we're looking to nab at least one celebrity. We may need to beat out Anquan Boldin for Antonio Cromartie. And there's no truth to the rumor that the money is simply going to the effort to build a home for all of @a_cromartie31's kids. That one's for @chaddukes. Come on Jets' fans, Cromartie is just $51 right now.

All kidding aside, there's hundreds of celebrities up for bids.

Michael Strahan might be nice. We're counting on Kelly Naqi and Dr. Ian Smith staying out of the bidding for @MichaelStrahan.

What "Jersey Shore" fan wouldn't want to win the scorned Twitter account of @MTVSammi? If only the megapack included a smoosh with Sammi Sweetheart.

Gayle King is up there. You say, who? Good for you. No MMA blog reader should be aware of @kinggayle unless you actually write the blog. Well-roundedness is needed in blogging and MMA.

It is for charity so no jokes about Pete Carroll. The least Reggie Bush could do is bid on @petecarroll or vice versa.

DREAM 16 Friday night: Miller wants to smack down idol Sakuraba

DREAM has put together another interesting card this weekend. Japan's top lightweight Shinya Aoki is featured as is former Olympic judo gold medalist Satoshi Ishii along with Gegard Mousasi. The fight Japanese fans might be looking forward to the most is another Kazushi Sakuraba superfight. The 41-year old legend faces American Jason Miller. "Mayhem" is a big hit in Japan, but he won't be getting too many cheers in Nagoya. Miller, 29, knows that, but he's still fired up to face a guy that he watched growing up.

"It was always my dream to fight Sakuraba," Miller told Heavy.com just before he left for Japan. "It's a bit surreal sitting here, packing my bags, getting ready to step over there across the sea and beat up a dude that I was like 'wow! Sakuraba!' It kicks ass. I'm excited about it."

Sakuraba (26-13-1) has been in there with the likes of Ken Shamrock, Ricardo Arona, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Kevin Randleman, Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, Quinton Jackson, Renzo Gracie, Vitor Belfort, and three times each against Royce Gracie and Wanderlei Silva.

The Ishii fight against Ikuhisa Minowa is one worth watching. There have been rumors about the 24-year-old dropping to light heavyweight. This fight was announced just a few days ago which calls into question what sort of training camp Ishii was in. By the results of the weigh-in, it doesn't like he was going too hard. Ishii fights this one at a higher weight, 235 pounds, than his debut fight where he was only 229. Minowaman has a solid gas tank at only 193 pounds.

The card is loaded with fights in the 140-pound range. Those should produce some standup wars. Aoki is always a good watch as well. His reputation took a hit when he lost to Gilbert Melendez in a Strikeforce versus DREAM matchup back in June. He's still won four-of-five fights and severely injured Tatsuya Kawajiri and Mizuto Hirota in his last two victories. Marcus Aurelio is a very good Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner. It'll be interesting to see if he can hang with Aoki and more importantly not leave the ring with a snapped limb.

DREAM 16 weigh-in (Courtesy AOL Fanhouse):

Tatsuya Mizuno (203.5 lb) vs. Gegard Mousasi (204.6)
Jason Miller (184.8) vs. Kazushi Sakuraba (182.6)
Shinya Aoki (153.34) vs. Marcus Aurelio (153.34)
Satoshi Ishii (235.4) vs. Ikuhisa Minowa (193.6)
Chase Beebe (140.8) vs. Hiroyuki Takaya (140.8)

Sengoku already did it once with the Yoshida fight.  The Ishii-Minowaman fight highlights a pretty solid card featuring Gegard Mousasi, Jason Miller, Joachim Hansen and Shinya Aoki.  DREAM 16 (on HDNet Sat. 2 a.m. ET): Ikuhisa Minowa vs. Satoshi IshiiHiroyuki Takaya vs. Chase BeebeMichihiro Omigawa vs. Cole EscovedoMitsuhiro Ishida vs. Akiyo Nishiura Kazushi Sakuraba vs. Jason MillerShinya Aoki vs. Marcus AurelioKazuyuki Miyata vs. Takeshi InoueHideo Tokoro vs. Joachim HansenGegard Mousasi vs. Tatsuya Mizuno

The low single! Pudzianowski uses wrestling to maul Butterbean

Fat guys and wrestling don't go together. At least not with James Toney and Eric "Butterbean" Esch. Randy Couture, an accomplished amateur wrestler used the low single to takedown and eventually take out Toney. Mariusz Pudzianowski has zero wrestling background but even he knows that dudes with huge guts can't defend the lower part of their legs. Pudzianowski danced around Butterbean for a minute before he shot at the 400-pounder's leg and drove through for a takedown. On the ground, Pudzianowski unloaded with 70-plus shots before Butterbean, who was like an elephant on its back, was saved a few seconds later. A win over a grossly out of shape Butterbean, 44, isn't much to be proud of but it did allow the former World's Strongman champ to get back on the horse after he was destroyed by Tim Sylvia back in June. Pudzianowski (3-1) had major conditioning issues in that fight. He gassed within three minutes with his whole body turning purple. Pudzianowski was noticably less shredded in this fight.

Actor Kevin James will star as an MMA fighter in upcoming film

Kevin James is a big backer of the UFC and pals with Randy Couture. He's trained MMA in the past with Couture and several other stars of the game. Now he wants to bring more attention to the sport by bringing it to the silver screen. From The Wrap: Sony has announced that "Grown Ups" star Kevin James will re-team with the studio for an untitled movie set in the world of mixed martial arts.James will play a physics teacher whose school is facing drastic budget cuts. In order to earn money to save his best friend's job and the music program that his students hold dear, he moonlights as an MMA fighter, and ultimately winds up doing battle in the UFC.The video features Couture and James sparring back in 2006. "The Natural" is probably taking it easy on the big fella, but James doesn't look like a clown either. According to several reports on the Internet, James wrestled and played football in high school. The 45-year-old actor now appears to be around 5-foot-8, 250 pounds. So when he steps into the Octagon, which real fighter should he face?

Roller coaster of fights: Ups and downs of Frank Mir

With an MMA career that spans nearly 10 years, Frank Mir has seen many ups and downs. Check out the mountain range of his life.Hill: A young Frank Mir starts his career with the UFC with a bang, spending just over two minutes in the Octagon in his first two fights. He submitted Roberto Travern at UFC 34 then Pete Williams at UFC 36. Valley: The young phenom stumbles, losing by TKO to Ian Freeman at UFC 38.Head-Stompin' hill: Mir rebounded with a 46-second toehold submission of Tank Abbott, then a disqualification win over Wes Sims after Sims stomped Mir in the head at UFC 43. At UFC 46, Mir knocked Sims out, earning a title shot at Tim Sylvia.Mt. Arm Snap: Mir won the UFC heavyweight championship at UFC 48 by breaking Tim Sylvia's arm. Just three years into his pro MMA career, Mir was at the top of the world.  Valley of the Motorcycle Crash: Mir's worst valley came not in the Octagon, but on the road. On September 17, 2004, he was involved in a serious motorcycle accident that tore up his leg. He was unable to defend his belt, and was stripped of his title.Valley of the Unprepared: The Frank Mir who submitted his way to the top of the UFC heavyweight pile was nowhere to be seen when he returned to the UFC 57 in February of 2006. In his first fight after his motorcycle accident, Mir was TKOed by Marcio Cruz. He pulled out a decision over Dan Christison, but was then TKOed by another UFC phenom, Brandon Vera, at UFC 65. I'm Back Hill: Mir needed a win. He had been unimpressive in three fights, and then had to postpone a bout with Antoni Hardonk because of a shoulder injury. He did win, quickly submitting Hardonk. He then had another quick win over some guy named Brock Lesnar. Mt. Interim Champion: After coaching against him for the eighth season of "The Ultimate Fighter," Mir beat Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 92. Mir won in a second round TKO, winning the interim belt and earning a shot at Brock Lesnar. The winner would unify the belts.Valley of UFC 100: At the biggest and most publicized UFC event in history, Mir's match with Lesnar was the main event. The two trash talked for months before the fight, but Lesnar easily won by TKO. Lesnar controlled Mir on the ground, then pounded him out for the win.French Fighter Hill: Mir got back on track with a win over Cheick Kongo that saw Mir return to his grappling roots. He won by a guillotine. Not Another Big Wrestler! Valley: Mir couldn't sustain his winning ways, getting knocked out by Shane Carwin at UFC 111. This leads us to Mir's match-up with MMA legend Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic at UFC 119 this Saturday. Will this bout be a hill or valley for Mir?

Guillard starts off UFC 119 main card with split decision win

INDIANAPOLIS -- Melvin Guillard won a split decision over Jeremy Stephens at UFC 119, 29-28, 28-29 and 30-27. This is Guillard's third win in a rowStephens started the round by knocking down Guillard, but the tide quickly changed. With strong movement and powerful punches, Guillard ruled the first round. He got the better of each exchange with Stephens, and even showboated a bit when avoiding strikes. In the second round, Stephens attacked with more leg kicks, while Guillard focused his attack on Stephens' body.  The round was interrupted twice as both fighters received unintentional shots to the groin.Stephens complained of a groin strike halfway through the round. Stephens was given a second to recover, and the fight continued without crowd complaint. However, when Stephens landed a clear kick to Guillard's groin, Conseco Fieldhouse became filled with boos. For the third round, Guillard continued with body shots, kicks and impressive movement. Stephens had a shot near the end of the fight when he wobbled Guillard with a punch, but then missed on a flying knee right after, giving up his opportunity to end the bout."I trained hard and I felt like I did enough to get the win tonight. I did more and I honestly don’t think he hit me in the face one time," Guillard said after the fight. "I knew he wanted to stand and bang. I was a state champion in wrestling and a brown belt in judo so I could’ve taken it to the ground but I wanted to stick to my game plan.”

Ryan Bader: Once Big Nog's 'Golden Boy,' Now Little Nog's Enemy

Filed under: UFCINDIANAPOLIS -- Just over two years ago, Ryan Bader walked into a Las Vegas gym with a dream to fight in the UFC. He was a blue-chip prospect, a two-time collegiate All-American wrestler who'd steamrolled his way to an unbeaten 7-0 record.

Bader made the cut for The Ultimate Fighter, where he quickly impressed everyone, but perhaps none more than season eight coach Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. In fact, Nogueira thought so highly of Bader that he immediately earmarked him for his first pick in the draft.

"I remember we were in the octagon, me, Frank Mir and Dana White, the first day we pick the guys," Nogueira recalled. "They were training, light sparring and we were watching before we picked them. I saw him shoot the double leg, it was so good. And he had fast hands. He was my first pick. I said, 'That's my golden boy.'"

Sherk took UFC 119 fight without knowing who Dunham was

Sean Sherk is itching to get back in the Octagon this weekend at UFC 119. It sounds odd since the last time we saw Sherk he was running around the cage trying to catch Frank Edgar and then ran from the MGM Garden Arena following the loss. You forgot? Sherk was one of the big victories for Edgar as he made his way to the title upset victory over B.J. Penn and then another upset in defending the strap. That could've been Sherk in there against Penn, but just like the Hawaiian, he couldn't catch Edgar. Now he's got someone who'll stand in front of him in Evan Dunham. This is nice step up for Dunham. All the pressure is on the veteran Sherk. He doesn't care. After an injury-filled 16 months, he just wants to fight. "To be honest when they offered me the fight with Dunham, I didn't know who he was and I just said 'OK, sounds good.' I didn't even look into it," Sherk told Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press. "I just wanted to fight and I accepted the fight, not knowing who he was."Dunham only has four UFC fights under his belt but launched himself into the top 10 of the UFC's 155-pound division with a big win over Tyson Griffin. "After I started watching some video, I'm like 'All right, OK, this is going to be a tough fight. So I better get my ass going and train like I always do," said Sherk. "If I do that, then there's nothing to worry about. I know I can hang with the best in the world, I can beat the best in the world. So nothing's changed on my end."Sherk's resume is impressive at 34-4-1. He held the UFC lightweight title until he got popped for a positive drug test following UFC 73. His only losses have come to current or former world champions, Penn, George St. Pierre, Matt Hughes and Edgar. The question now is his age. He's 37 years old and his body broke down often following the Edgar loss in May of 2009. He missed a fight at UFC 104 against Gleison Tibau because of a shoulder issue. Then he bailed from UFC 108 when he suffered a nasty cut on his forehead in training. He was also offered Clay Guida in March but turned it down because of more nagging injuries. Sherk said it was just a bad run of luck. "I don't think I would say I've been cursed. I've been fighting professionally for 11 years, I've got 42 professional fights and I've been pulled out of two fights in 11 years. And it just so happens those two fights were back-to-back," said Sherk. "It's not a curse by any means, it's just the way it is. We play rough and sometimes you get hurt."Sherk versus Dunham (11-0, 4-0 UFC) should be a good tactical scrap. Dunham has given his opponents fits with his takedowns. That might not be so easy against an accomplished MMA wrestler like Sherk. But the issue for Sherk once again is his lack of height and reach. If it turns into a standup war, the 5-foot-6 Sherk may have trouble dealing with the 5-11 Dunham. It might be refreshing to see Sherk go back to his bread and butter takedown game but as fighter's get older, they tend to take the less strenuous approach on the feet.
