History Lesson: Top 5 most surprising WEC fighters

With the UFC eating up the WEC at the end of the year, it's worth looking back at the WEC history, including the men who fought in the WEC. Starting in 2001, the WEC has hosted fight legends of the past and superstars of the future. But there are some surprises in the list:

5. Brandon Vera: His best known fight was an upset of Frank Mir, but Vera made his mark on the WEC's heavyweight division early in his career. He scored a TKO over Mike Whitehead and knocked out Andre Mussi at WEC 13.

4. Nick Diaz: Before Stockton's finest fought in the UFC and then became the Strikeforce champ, a young Diaz fought at WEC 6. Sharing the card with future opponent Frank Shamrock, Diaz submitted Joe Hurley with a kimura in less than two minutes.

3. Shane Carwin: The UFC heavyweight contender made his MMA debut in the WEC, scoring a submission by strikes over Carlton Jones at WEC 17.

2. Frank Shamrock: In between his bouts with the UFC and EliteXC/Strikeforce, Shamrock took his submission magic to the WEC. Fighting on WEC 6 in 2003, Shamrock armbarred Bryan Pardoe in under two minutes.

1. Dan Severn: The UFC Hall-of-Famer also holds a special place in WEC history. As the main event on the WEC's first card in 2001, Severn beat Travis Fulton -- the man with more than 250 fights under his belt -- in a decision.

Freediving: Diving Au Naturel

What Is Freediving? Freediving is the act of diving down under the surface of water with no air source, ie holding you breath. Freediving is at once the logical evolution of snorkelling, the predecessor of scuba and its own separate entity. It?s not correct to see freediving as just another term for snorkelling because, as [...]

UFC/WEC merger press conference notes: Aldo fights at UFC 125

Hardcore fight fans know the WEC has a great product and now those fighters will get to show their skills on the big stage at UFC shows. UFC president Dana White announced this afternoon that the WEC is merging with the UFC. The WEC features the 135, 145 and 155 pound weight classes. So greats like Jose Aldo, Dominick Cruz, Ben Henderson, Urijah Faber, Joe Benavidez and Miguel Torres will all be branded as UFC fighters.

This is also a big boost for Versus. The WEC's network will air four UFC cards in 2011. That should deliver a huge ratings boost. It appears simply because of the name WEC, the 2010 WEC shows were consistently delivering only a third the audience that similar UFC shows were on Spike. That gap should be closed significantly in 2011.

Here are the key points discussed during today's conference call:

- The final WEC card is Dec. 16 in Phoenix

- Versus will present four UFC cards in 2011

- The winner of the Ben Henderson-Anthony Pettis fight on Dec. 16 will carry the WEC lightweight belt over to the UFC and get an immediate shot at the winner of UFC champ Frank Edgar versus Gray Maynard. It could be promoted as a unification bout, UFC versus WEC.

- Jose Aldo is now the UFC featherweight champion and will battle a fighter TBA at UFC 125 on Jan. 1. Rumors have swirled that it's Mark Hominick with Josh Grispi as the alternate.

- Dominick Cruz defends his 135-title against Scott Jorgensen on Dec. 16. Whoever wins is the new UFC bantamweight champ.

- It's likely that all UFC featherweight and bantamweight title fights will now be on pay-per-view

- All employees of the WEC, including GM Reed Harris and matchmaker Sean Shelby, are still part of the Zuffa family. WEC ring girl Brittany Palmer's status is unknown.

UPDATE: Palmer is coming over the UFC. According to Fighter's Only Magazine, White confirmed that via Twitter.

- This opens the door for "The Ultimate Fighter" to feature fighters from the 135 and 145 pound weight classes.

- The promotion hasn't discussed future TUF's but this could mean a coaching showdown between Urijah Faber and Miguel Torres

- WEC fighters will have to adjust to a bigger cage. The Octagon is larger than the current WEC cage by five-feet in diameter.

- The reported story that the UFC was going announce a network with deal with Fox or NBC plus the addition of a UFC network was purely speculation (5:26 mark - Part 1 video).

- A 125-pound weight class is on the way but White had no timetable for its arrival.

Listen here for part three.

Chris Lytle's Wish List: Match vs. Carlos Condit, Move Closer to Title Shot

Filed under:

At 36 years old, Chris Lytle can see the finish line to his career. He still thinks it's far off into the future, but he knows it's coming. Ironically, though, the UFC veteran is in the midst of the best stretch of his UFC tenure.

Following his unanimous decision win over former welterweight champion Matt Serra at UFC 119, Lytle has won four straight matches and five of his last six, dropping only a close split decision to Marcus Davis in January 2009. And with time ticking, Lytle wants a big fight. In fact, his sights are respectfully set on one man: the surging Carlos Condit.

Bellator: Frausto ends Fujii's winning streak to win women's belt

Zoila Frausto won the first women's Bellator belt by ending Megumi Fujii's 22-win streak with a split decision, 48-47, 49-46, 47-48. Frausto's win ended the longest winning streak in MMA.

Fujii dominated the first round, even knocking Frausto down early. But the last 20 seconds, Frausto wobbled her with a head kick, followed by huge strikes. Fujii survived and moved ahead slightly in the second, but never really found a rhythm.

Frausto showed off her striking skills in the third round, pushing the pace and landing several big strikes. Fujii looked in trouble more than once, and sustained a large mouse underneath her eye. Though she is a submission specialist, Fujii did not make many attempts to get a takedown. She finally tried for a clinch in the fourth round, but was unable to use her judo skills to throw Frausto. Fujii finally got a takedown in the final minute of the fight, but didn't have enough time or energy to do anything with it.

Fujii's loss is surprising, and her fight strategy was puzzling. Of her 22 wins, 18 have ended by submission, but she did not make many attempts to get Frausto to the ground. She absorbed many of Frausto's power shots along the way.

Frausto's win is her fifth in a row. She's had a busy 2010. In addition to winning the Bellator belt with wins over Fujii, Jessica Aguilar, Jessica Pene and Rosi Sexton, she also has wins over Michelle Ould and Jessica Rakoczy this year. She also lost to Strikeforce's Miesha Tate in March.

In an earlier bout, Mike Bernhard won a close decision over Dragan Tesanovic, with the judges seeing it 30-27, 29-28, 29-28. The close decision was marred by accidental eye pokes and kicks to the crotch, but Bernhard's wrestling ended up being the difference.

Asphalt & Rubber Turns Two Years Old Today

And now for the most important news story of the year: Asphalt & Rubber turns two-years-old today (clap you crazy bastards!). Officially now in our “terrible twos”, A&R continues to grow beyond anything I possibly couldhave imagined when I first started the site one cold October morning in a frost-covered Pennsylvania. Reporting everything from race results to business analysis, from industry news to humorous distractions, we’ve served over 1,800 articles to our now 300,000+ loyal monthly readers. While I write occasionally, Asphalt & Rubber really wouldn’t be possible without the help from a metric ton of people, most notably Daniel Lloyd (systems administrator / reluctant coder), Dustin Gibbs (web developer / photographer / escape driver), Peter Lombardi (photographer / designer), Jason Yu (photographer / umbrella girl finder), Scott Jones (photographer / resident person over 50), and Tim Hoefer (hetero life-partner / tamed motorcycle rider). Also a big thanks goes out to all our friends (you know who you are) and family (thanks Mom for letting me use your basement) for supporting this sometimes profitable endeavor. But most importantly, thank you to all our readers, who make it all worthwhile. Want to get in on the love fest? Follow us on Twitter, Friend us on Facebook, or just leave a comment below.

African-American bond may keep Jon Jones from facing Rashad Evans

After waiting an eternity, Rashad Evans will have the chance to regain the UFC light heavyweight title sometime in 2011. Fellow light heavyweight Jon Jones is on the fast track. Two more wins for the 24-year-old and fans will be howling for him to get a shot. But the UFC may have another problem on its hands with fighters from the same camp not wanting to square off. Jones said the friendship between he and Evans, who both train at Jackson's Submission Fighting in New Mexico, has a deeper connection.

"Not that it has anything to do with race, but we're both African-American guys and we're fighters. We've got a lot of similarities between family and all this other type of stuff," Jones told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Jones (11-1, 6-1 UFC) is right there aren't a lot of African-Americans fighting at the highest level. It's part of the reason he chose to go so far away from home in Albuquerque. Aside from the chance to work with a guru like Greg Jackson, he saw a guy who came from the same background in Evans.

"Rashad's a unique character to me. There's not many guys that I can relate to like Rashad, and preparing to do physical damage to him just doesn't add up to me," said Jones.

Much like AKA teammates Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch, who may be faced with a similar decision if Koscheck upsets Georges St. Pierre for the welterweight title, Jones says he and Evans are too tight to fight.

"Fighting Rashad is the last thing I'd ever want to do," Jones said. "To me, being able to call Rashad when we're 40 years old and say, 'Let's go fishing,' or something like that, that's more important than the paycheck we would get today. I train with the guy. We've had conversations about personal things."

This is a mounting issue for UFC matchmakers. Dana White is digging in on his stance. He doesn't understand why teammates won't fight each other and last week he think said they're afraid to lose a buddy.

Team Fedor asks, now who's overrated?

Ah, what could've been. There was a day when Dana White dreamed of matching Brock Lesnar and Fedor Emelianenko at Cowboys Stadium. That could still be a mega-fight but some of the luster has worn off since both have now fallen in 2010. White Tweeted a little smiley face the night that Fedor was upset by Fabricio Werdum back in June. The Russian contigent that works with Fedor waited a few days, but now it's their turn to chuckle at Lesnar's fall from grace.

"I have long said that Lesnar is more of a product of UFC’s PR rather than a serious fighter and that fight clearly confirmed it," said Fedor's manager Vadim Finkelchtein in an interview on AllBoxing.com.

"I do not want to say that Lesnar is a nobody, but he has very little experience. What does he have six fights in MMA? He's a pure product UFC, who met a real fighter and he lost."

He said Cain Velasquez can truly be promoted as one of the best heavyweights in the world.

"In my opinion, he is a very good fighter. Capable and strong," said Finkelchtein. "The UFC can now present him as the best in the world and it is certainly debatable, but he's really a fighter, not a product of PR."

He also denied that M-1 and Fedor have spoken anytime recently with the UFC. White told a story recently of meeting Fedor face-to-face for the first time. Finkelchtein said that kind of talk was stupidity and was very strong about re-signing with Showtime.

"Now we are in active negotiations with Showtime on a contract extension, and perhaps we will renew it. But the UFC does not offer such opportunities and imposes its monopoly conditions. They believe that everyone should be in the UFC. We would love to fight with Lesnar, and Velasquez and all but why should we give up all these undertakings, all the years spent on Fedor’s development will go to them? Fedor did not grow in the UFC, right? So why should he go to the UFC? If Dana White wants to fight, he can easily hold it, because we do not mind. And while the contract with Showtime gives us more opportunities."

There you have it. Both fighters have fallen in 2010 but neither side is going to budge when it comes to getting Fedor to the world's biggest stage.

USC QB wants to go all Velasquez on Oregon, the Lesnars from the north

Here's more proof the kiddies between 18 and 34 years old love their mixed martial arts. The L.A. Times says USC quarterback Matt Barkley has "caused a stir" with his MMA-related Tweet regarding the Trojans' upcoming game against unbeaten Oregon. The 21-year-old from Newport Beach, Calif., must've enjoyed David toppling Goliath when Cain Velasquez pulled the upset on Brock Lesnar at UFC 121. Tweeted Barkley:

"Wow, Brock just got rocked! Lesnar is to Oregon as Velasquez is to SC. Lezgo."

Before it was deleted, the QB's Tweet was re-Tweeted by plenty of Ducks fans.

Why would Oregon fans be insulted? Their team is the bully on the block in the Pac-10. It seems like a nice comparison. Was it really an insult? The insult comes when you force a kid who makes a harmless analogy feel like he did something wrong.

"That had nothing to do with Oregon," Barkley said after practice. "I just got fired up thinking about my teammates.

"It had to do with kind of being an underdog in a big fight, like we're going into. Everyone, of course, takes it out of context and blows it up. But that was about us and about our team and the adversity we've been through."

Chip Kelly probably appreciates the comparison. After all, the Oregon coach is the guy who uses classic boxing wars to get his players fired up. Kelly had the team watch the 2002 fight where "Irish" Mickey Ward pulled the upset on Arturo Gatti.

"You can get knocked out in the seventh round -- all you can do is be ready to battle each week and make it to the eighth round,'' Kelly said.

Ward, an old friend of Kelly's, actually spoke to the team last week. Kelly likens the season to a 12-round fight.

So let's get this clear Oregon fans, your coach can use fighting references to talk about the games but USC can't?

Better Late Than Never: UFC-WEC Merger Is Long Overdue

It's about time. After years of operating the WEC as a little brother organization to the UFC, Zuffa has finally decided to do the sensible thing and bring all its fighters under one roof. It was a long wait, but at least it's over.

The way UFC president Dana White tells it, this was all about timing. It was the perfect plan and now is the perfect time to implement it. Then again, White's never been afraid to indulge in a little revisionist history when it suits him, so take that explanation with a grain of salt.

The truth is, the WEC has long suffered from the same branding problem that every other competing MMA organization has faced. To many casual fans, the UFC is MMA. That's great for the industry leader, but not so great for little brother. That's why, as exciting as the WEC fights have been, ratings have lagged.

Aragon World Superbike Test Day 2 Times

Testing continued on Thursday for the World Superbike grid at the Motorland Aragon circuit, and with Carlos Checa having taken his leave early to head to Estoril for an outing aboard the Pramac Ducati MotoGP bike, it was Max Biaggi's turn to top the timesheets. Biaggi took nearly seven tenths of his time from Wednesday, after having spent the session testing new brakes from Brembo. The Italian judged them to be a big improvement, but the increase in braking power made the bike difficult to control on the brakes. More setup work will be required, according to the Italian, which will continue tomorrow.

The absence of precise timing saw four men tie for the 2nd fastest time, Alstare Suzuki's Michel Fabrizio, BMW's Troy Corser, Pata Aprilia's Nori Haga and the Kawasaki of Tom Sykes. Biaggi's Alitalia Aprilia teammate Leon Camier was just a tenth of a second slower, while Leon Haslam was 1.3 seconds slower than Max Biaggi.

Testing concludes on Friday.

Aragon World Superbike Test Day 1 Times

The World Superbike riders have been hard at work for the 2011 season, with a large group gathering at the Motorland Aragon circuit to test their new bikes for next season. Carlos Checa was the fastest of the bunch by over a second, the Althea Ducati rider due to set out for Estoril on Thursday.

Michel Fabrizio's switch to the Alstare Suzuki team has gone swimmingly so far, the former Xerox Ducati rider the 2nd fastest rider on track, ahead of a bevy of Aprilia's, led by 2010 World Superbike Champion Max Biaggi, though new convert Noriyuki Haga interposed himself between the two factory bikes of Biaggi and Leon Camier.

Work continues for the Kawasaki team on their brand new bike, with Tom Sykes and Katsuaki Fujiwara testing the 2011 version of the ZX-10R, with Sykes also running back-to-back comparisons with the 2010 bike. But the BMW pit has been busiest, with a host of experienced mechanics being brought in to work on the bike for next season. So far, it has not produced the results hoped for, as Troy Corser and new signing Leon Haslam were well down the timesheets.
