Last weekend at Strikeforce in San Jose, Nick Diaz avenged his most recent defeat with a win over KJ Noons. That makes it eight straight wins for Diaz. Now he says it's time for a step up.
"[Noons] built a name on me though," said Diaz (23-7). "I want to fight somebody that built their own name in MMA. I want to fight the best in the world. If you don't think I'm the best in the world then bring me the best in the world."
Diaz says he believes UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre is the best in the world.
"If you don't think I'm the best then fight this guy. People need to stand up and make this happen."
Fans and the media can "stand up" all they want, Diaz won't ever fight GSP as long as he's under the Strikeforce banner. The UFC doesn't and likely will never get involved in co-promotions. That sounds unfair, but Diaz is where he is because of who he is. Dana White has expressed respect for both of the Diaz brothers, but Nate is manageable and Nick is not. White has talked in the past about Nick not wanting to play the game. Is he right? Well, with a long list of media snubs and drug-test snafus, Nick decided to no-show another pre-fight presser a few weeks ago before the fight against Noons. So does he really want to fight St. Pierre?
Diaz also talks about wanting to be paid. He made $50,000 for this fight, which if he is in the top 10 pound-for-pound or close to it, that purse is a bit underwhelming. But no one should feel too sorry for him. Diaz has blazed his own trail and because of his ability to fight anywhere from 155 to 185 pounds. There's always going to be a fight waiting for him. It just won't be with St. Pierre anytime soon.
