Shields asks, ?Who?? about Ellenberger, his UFN 25 opponent

In the realm of trash talk, there are few more effective comebacks than a simple, "Who?" when discussing your opponent. Jake Shields employed this method when discussing Jake Ellenberger, his opponent at Ultimate Fight Night 25.

"I don't really know who the guy is," Shields told MMAjunkie.com Radio. "That's my statement. I have no opinion of the guy yet. I guess I don't even know if I don't like him or not. I just hear he keeps talking crap. I don't know. I'm not sure why because I don't even know who he is."

Well, Jake, he is talking crap because he's fighting you on Sept. 17 in New Orleans, and this is what Jake Ellenberger does. He uses Twitter to get the fights he wants. He has been calling out Shields since October, and now he has gotten the bout that he wants. You can't hate a game that works, Shields, especially since you worked it so well in this radio interview.

Since Ellenberger does know how to work Twitter to his advantage, he did have a simple reply to his opponent.

Speaking of Twitter, follow Maggie Hendricks here and Steve Cofield here.

MMA Marketplace: Books to get you through the ?off-season?

It's that time again. After a marathon of fight cards, MMA goes into its traditional "off-season," with no major cards until Strikeforce hits suburban Chicago on July 30. (There will be Strikeforce Challengers, Bellator and DREAM cards in the next few weeks.)

How do you manage? First, be happy that you're not a basketball fan. With the NBA lockout in place, there's no telling when they'll get to see their sport again. Then, you could do something crazy like pop open a book. Here are a few of the latest MMA books that are either new on the market or will be released in the coming weeks.

"Why I Fight: The Belt Is Just an Accessory," by Jay Dee "B.J." Penn and Dave Weintraub: The autobiography of the UFC's former and lightweight champion has been praised for being honest, detail-oriented and well-written. Penn doesn't hold back, touching on everything from the way the UFC does business to his own fighting philosophies.

"MMA Instruction Manual: The Muay Thai Clinch, Takedowns, Takedown Defense, and Ground Fighting" by Anderson Silva and Glen Cordoza: If you're interested in a technical breakdown of MMA, why not learn from the fighter ranked No. 1 in the world? Silva's book focuses on how to employ some of the dangerous attacks he uses in his fights. For some reason, Steven Seagal is not listed as a co-author.

"Fighting Words: In-Depth Interviews with the Biggest Names in Mixed Martial Arts" by Mike Straka: As the host of HDNet's "Fighting Words," Straka has interviewed many of MMA's luminaries. His book promises a close look at MMA through interviews of Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture, Cain Velasquez, Frankie Edgar, Dana White, Renzo Gracie, Ken and Frank Shamrock, Bas Rutten and Jon Jones. (Side note: The book's release date is reportedly July 15, but you can it's in-stock at Amazon today.)

"Death Clutch: My Story of Determination, Domination, and Survival" by Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman: Brock Lesnar is both a loved and hated figure in MMA. If you want to feed your love or your hate of the former UFC heavyweight champ, read the book that promises a look at "about what it takes not only to succeed in the world's fastest-growing sport but to become the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World."

"Say Uncle!: Catch-As-Catch Can Wrestling and the Roots of Ultimate Fighting, Pro Wrestling & Modern Grappling" by Jake Shannon: If you're a history nerd (like me), you'll get into this look at catch wrestling and how it evolved around the world. With interviews from Karl Gotch and Josh Barnett, the book illustrates catch wrestling's continuing effect on MMA today.

On a completely un-MMA note, Yahoo! Sports own Jay Busbee recently released "Bluff City," an awesome work of fiction that features the Elvis Brawl, a pro wrestling match of Elvis impersonators. Clearly, it is worth your time.

Will Stann?s hero status put muzzle on Sonnen?

Chael Sonnen is back and ready to flame throw on various UFC fighters. He opened with a bang by smashing Wanderlei Silva before the Brazilian lost at UFC 132. For Sonnen, everyone has been fair game, but does that include his next opponent Brian Stann?

Stann, a former football player at Navy and a Marine, was a war hero in Iraq. The kid is squeaky clean and a big fan favorite. Will Sonnen dare to cross the line as he's done with so many previous opponents? Stann says no.

"I know Chael; he's just not going to do it. I know there's respect there. If he chooses to do it, honestly, I just don't take it personally ? the same way when I fought Chris Leben and he said I couldn't punch my way out of a paper bag. Fighters have to sell fights. If I get wrapped up in the trash talk, I'm not focusing on the technical skills that I need to win the actual fight," Stann told MMAjunkie. "I have so many coaches and great training partners around me that I don't really have time to pay attention to any of it? I don't know if Chael in his heart of hearts really believes what he's saying,"

On ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas, Frank Trigg of "The MMA Insiders" spoke about Sonnen's possible tactics before the Stann fight and why the UFC has jumped feet first back into the Chael business.

Fertitta interview Part 2: Expanding the schedule and big television deal on the horizon

This is a huge year for the UFC. Unlike 2004 and 2005, when the promotion was basically begging television executives to work with its product, the UFC's in a position of strength.

Back then, the UFC would run events every few months. The schedule has expanded to the point where its approaching 30 events each year. Another five years from now, there may only may only be a few weeks a year without an event.

"I could definitely see potentially a fight a week. There's only so much we can push on the pay-per-view side of it. there's only so many big fights we can ask the public to pay for, " UFC president Lorenzo Fertitta told ESPNRadio1100's "The MMA Insiders" show. "But if you're getting it on free TV, I don't see why people wouldn't want to watch."

If the UFC has that many fight cards, it'll be looking for more outlets. or control of its own network.

"The reality is as the sport continues to grow, not just here in North America, but around the globe ... there's going to need to be dates to cultivate that talent as well," said Fertitta.

Fertitta joined Kevin Iole and myself on ESPNRadio1100 on Friday. In Part one of the interview, Fertitta was critical of the Culinary Union for blocking MMA's legalization in New York.

Davis out of UFC 133: Tito says no, UFC trying to make Evans-Machida II

Sometimes an injury can crush a card, but the UFC may catch a break this time. The promotion confirmed that Davis is out of the main event at UFC 133 with an injury and now the search is on for replacement to face Rashad Evans.

Who fills in? There aren't many big names available. Tito Ortiz, a winner just 10 days ago at UFC 132, was offered, said no thanks and explained via Twitter:

I have a life and things to take care of. The fight game is about making the right choices of my career. If you knew what I have been going through you all would understand. Peaking for a fight is what makes a fighter unstoppable! Timing is everything in life. This is a rebuild year for me not do or die. The time will come again!

Lyoto Machida is the most obvious candidate. Machida (17-2, 9-2 UFC) last fought in late April. It took him just 65 seconds to knockout out Randy Couture at UFC 129. Now Machida and his management team have to decide if he should take a fight on 25 days notice against a guy he already destroyed.

Machida produced one of the nastier knockouts in UFC history when he took away Evans' UFC light heavyweight title back at UFC 98. Evans (15-1-1, 10-1-1 UFC) tried to counter-strike with one of the best counter-strikers in the world, and was left twisted and out cold on the floor.

Evans still switched training camps even after a scheduled fight with former training partner Jon Jones went by the wayside. He's now working mainly out of Imperial Athletics in Boca Raton, Fla.

In fight No. 1 versus Machida, he employed lots of fakes and laid back. Hopefully, we'll get to see what Mike Van Arsdale and Brazilian Top Team can bring to the table.

If Machida says no, who's the next best option? Would Evans agree to face Rich Franklin or Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, who are already scheduled to fight each other on the UFC 133 undercard? A Strikeforce fighter like Gegard Mousasi (scheduled to fight at DREAM 17 this weekend) simply isn't high profile enough to put in a main event in the UFC. Any other ideas?

Verbal Sparring Between Jon Jones, Rampage Jackson Kicks Off UFC 135 Rivalry

It was practically guaranteed that putting UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones and challenger Quinton "Rampage" Jackson on the same podium would lead to some verbal jabs, a few laughs, and a candid admission or two.

We got all of the above from the UFC 135 headliners at a Tuesday press conference in Denver to announce their upcoming title match.

Though the two were largely civil to each other and shared a handshake at the conclusion of the afternoon, that didn't stop them from a couple of verbal exchanges that livened up the proceedings and set a competitive tone for an emerging rivalry despite the fact that their fight is more than two months away.

Among the most interesting sparring sessions came midway through, when a reporter asked Jackson if he thought Jones would look to take the fight to the ground.

"You know he is," he said. "Come on, man. Who's been standing with me, dog? Who's been actually doing mixed martial arts with me? Everybody's been wrestling me. You already know, player. "

Jones immediately rebutted Jackson's answer.

"I think I displayed pretty good kickboxing against Mauricio "Shogun [Rua]," he said. "And Shogun was throwing knees and elbows and high kicks and things. Rampage is like fighting a boxer in my opinion. If he thinks that I'm intimidated to stand with him, I think it's great he's under that impression."

Then Jackson stepped in again, and we'll go from there...

Jackson: "I just have to say, straight up, I respect you dog. I do think you are the future of MMA, straight-up. I'm keeping it real. But you fought Shogun when he was rusty as hell. He hadn't fought for a year. He had like two knee surgeries."

Jones: "There will always be excuses. He didn't fight the PRIDE Rampage, he fought the movie-star Rampage, so there will always be excuses."

Jackson: "You're right. There's always excuses. A hundred of them. I have like three of them for every time I lost, I'm not going to lie."

Jones: "Are you thinking of anything good now?"

Jackson: "I ain't going to need no excuses after this fight. I ain't going to need not one. You're going to need a bunch of them."

The fight, which takes place on September 24, will mark the first time in UFC history that two African-American fighters compete for a UFC championship. But it's also a bout seen by many as a battle between generations. Jackson, though just 33 years old, has been in the fight game for well over a decade, while the 24-year-old Jones is seen by many -- Rampage included, it seems -- as the sport's future superstar.

Even that storyline, though, brought a bit of back and forth from the pair, when a reporter asked if Jackson felt he needed to "teach this kid a lesson."

"Who you calling a kid, buddy?" Jones asked with a smile.

"Who you calling old, dog?" Jackson then said to a laugh. "I'm only 33. Goodness. You all act like I'm Randy Couture's decrepit old ass.

"You know, if I have to represent the old school, I guess I'll represent them," he continued. "You put me in that category. I was younger than him when I started. I was 21, 22 fighting Wanderlei [Silva] and stuff like that. I guess I'm old school, but with old school comes a lot of experience. He's the youngest champion, but I think he's the least experienced champion in UFC history. All that other stuff don't matter to me. I just come to fight and get my belt back. That's the only thing I care about. I got tunnel vision. I don't care about nothing else."

"I think Brock Lesnar might have been the least experienced champion," Jones responded. "Fighting Rampage is an honor. He's been around a long time. I've been watching him since high school or college. I respect his character and what he does for the sport. It's an opportunity for me to elevate. When you beat people who accomplish so much, you take a little bit of their thunder and accolades. That's what I did with Shogun, and that what I'd like to do with Rampage."

Neither fighter was very specific about what they expect from the fight, other than Jackson saying he envisions Jones "getting destroyed," and Jones saying he believes he's improved a lot since defeating Rua in March.

Jackson said he believes all the pressure is on Jones to defend the belt, and that he's motivated to take back the title which he last held in 2008.

"Him and Rashad got something in common," Jackson said. "They're both really cocky. I'm confident, very confident in myself. There's a difference. Last time I was this confident, I knocked someone [Chuck Liddell] out in the first round and got that belt. I've been working hard, training and doing all the right things, all the stuff I need to be doing. That belt's coming back to me, for real."

For once, Jones didn't respond. His answer, we assume, will be ready on September 24.

Toney prepping for Shamrock by fighting with local gym members

If it were anyone else, we'd be shocked. But it's James Toney, so anything's possible. The former boxing world champion, holding on to the final shreds of his dignity, was recently booted from a local gym in Southern California.

Larry Brown Sports reports that Toney, who's "prepping" for a September fight against 47-year-old Ken Shamrock, is no longer welcome at 360 Health Club in Reseda, Ca.

The gym would not comment on the matter citing company policy, but they did confirm that Toney is no longer a member. We're told Toney made another member feel uncomfortable with a verbal and/or physical threat.

When asked what happened between him and 360, Toney told LBS "We had a disagreement with the managers. We had too much traffic coming in ? the wrong traffic." We did not press Toney for details on the specifics of the incident, but officials at 360 say the suggestion that bringing in "the wrong traffic" was not the issue.

If you'd like to check out the 42-year-old in action, he's now at the IFC gym in Van Nuys, Ca.

Tito Ortiz shocks with UFC 132 submission of Ryan Bader

Tito Ortiz came back from the brink of extinction at UFC 132 on Saturday night, winning with a guillotine in the first round over Ryan Bader.

Bader was landing intermittent strikes until Ortiz moved inside and landed a right hand directly on Bader's jaw. Bader's knees buckled, and Ortiz jumped on top of him and sunk in an arm-in guillotine. Ortiz squeezed until Bader tapped at 1:56.

He was jubilant after the fight, resurrecting his gravedigger celebration, then jumping onto the side of the cage. He thanked UFC brass Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta for pushing him to win this fight.

Ortiz knew going into this fight that it was win or lose his job. He has been a legend in the UFC, but his last win was in 2006 over Ken Shamrock. He hasn't been a champion since 2003. Battling back and neck injuries, he had never been able to return to that form until Saturday.

For Bader, it was a chance to get back on track after losing for the first time in February to eventual UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones, but it didn't happen. Since being on the brink of the a title shot, Bader has gone 0-2, losing both fights by guillotine.

This win may not mean that Ortiz is ready for another title run, especially in the UFC's stacked light-heavyweight division. Nonetheless, Ortiz was on the brink of losing his job and possibly retiring, and he won in convincing fashion. That feat reminds MMA fans of why he is a legend in the sport.

What does ?Anderson Silva-money? get you? A nice new mansion

Lyoto Machida backed out of the planned fight with Rashad Evans because he reportedly wanted "Anderson Silva money," or a pay day more like that of his good friend, UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva. Machida thought he was in the position to ask for that kind of cash, but UFC president Dana White balked at this request:

"I opted not to pay him Anderson Silva money and told him when he accomplished all the things that Anderson Silva has accomplished, then maybe he'll make Anderson Silva-type money," an incredulous White told reporters.

Silva is on a 14-fight win streak and lives atop the Yahoo! Sports pound-for-pound rankings. For that, he made $200,000 in his UFC 126 knockout of Vitor Belfort, but that figure doesn't include any bonuses or cuts of pay-per-view buys, which may be a part of his contract. His sponsorship money also isn't included into that figure, and Kevin Iole estimated that he pulls seven figures for a fight.

In fact, he just used that money to buy a new million-dollar home in southern California. The Los Angeles Times reported that Silva bought a $1.76 million home in Palos Verdes Estates to be closer to his training homes. The house has an ocean view, four bedrooms, three and a half baths, a pool and sits on a half-acre lot.

Maybe this gives a clue behind Machida's motivation. Who doesn't want a home with an ocean view?

First no Fedor-Couture, now we?re denied Chestnut-Kobi

MMA's done a pretty good job of putting together the super matches we've asked for as fans. It's helped that Zuffa purchased most of its competitors, but there are still a few fights we've been denied. It's nothing like what boxing is dealing with in the elusive Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather or even worse competitive eating's quandary with Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi.

A squabble between promoter (Major League Eating) and athlete (Kobayashi) is keeping fans from seeing Chestnut-Kobayashi IV, V, VI and so on. It's a damn shame.

Yesterday, while Chestnut was scarfing down 62 hot dogs on Coney Island, Kobayashi tore through 69 on a rooftop in Manhattan.

It's similar to Fedor Emelianenko's battle over the years with the UFC. Fedor and his management team didn't want to sign an exclusive contract that would keep the fighter from competing in Sambo. Kobayashi wants to be able to travel the world and compete in non-sanctioned MLE events, but the promoters, the Shea brothers, won't acquiesce.

Because Fedor and Zuffa couldn't come to terms, we missed out on these dream matchups -Fedor vs. Randy Couture; Fedor vs. Brock Lesnar; Fedor vs. Chuck Liddell; Fedor vs. Anderson Silva and Fedor vs. Tito Ortiz.

Calculated Risk

It’s not uncommon, when telling someone that I’m a skydiver, to hear comments like: “Wow, you’re brave!” “That’s dangerous, don’t you get scared?” “Aren’t you afraid your ‘chute won’t open?” You get the idea. Truth is we are taking risks as skydivers, but they are calculated risks. Just as with anything else in life, you [...]

UFC 132 postfight: Screams of ?little guy!? inspired Cruz

UFC 132 could turn out to be a seminal moment for the bantamweight class in MMA.

The 135-pound title fight between Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber was the first time fighters of that size headlined a card. The result was a close five-round fight that was waged all over the Octagon.

The champ, who retained his title via unanimous decision, 50-45, 49-46 and 48-47, knew there was a lot more on the line that just his UFC title belt.

"Me and Urijah kind of set the bar for the 135ers especially. we had something to show everybody in the world today ... that 135ers can headline a card. 145ers can headline a card and it will be exciting," Cruz said. "We can compete with, you know heavyweights, 170 pounders. We all train hard. We all work hard. Just because we're little guys doesn't mean we can't scrap," joked Cruz.

There were even screams of "little guy, little guy" coming from the crowd. It turned out that the dude yelling for 25 minutes was Brandon Vera, Cruz's camp mate at Alliance Training Center in San Diego.

"I knew what that meant. That's when I'm sparring. It means, get on my toes, hop around, footwork [and] move. That's kind of like an active rest. Yeah, I did hear [Vera yelling]," said Cruz.

The bantamweights and featherweights have a chance to become some of the biggest stars in the game. They hardly ever have the stamina issues you sometimes see at heavyweight and light heavyweight. The smaller guys also seem to be more well-rounded which makes finishes, via submission or knockout, possible in just about every fight.

Many of boxing's biggest stars currently fight between 126-154 pounds, so it makes sense that Cruz, Faber, Demetrious Johnson, Jose Aldo, Kenny Florian and countless others could be mega-stars in the next few years. The UFC announced last month that it'll add one more weight class, the 125 pounders before the end of 2011.

Lombard to Marquardt: ?Let?s make it happen, brother?

Nate Marquardt's suspension has been officially lifted by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission. Earlier this week, Bellator middleweight Hector Lombard doubted that a fight between him and the maligned former UFC star would happen, but now he has another message for Marquardt:

That's right, Lombard would like to welcome Marquardt to Bellator as well as "whoop him up."

It's a fight that makes sense for both men, as Lombard's biggest problem in Bellator has been a lack of challenges. For Marquardt, it's the best fight available after being cut publicly from the UFC just after his suspension messed up the main event for UFC on Versus 4.

Rosholt, Rodriguez Win at Shark Fights 17

Filed under:

Jake Rosholt got revenge on Matt Horwich, while Ricco Rodriguez won his 12th straight fight in easy fashion, as Shark Fights put on its 17th event on Friday night in Frisco, Texas.

Rosholt, the former NCAA wrestling champion and UFC veteran, fought a cautious fight in defeating Horwich by unanimous decision. It was a rematch of a fight from eight months ago in which Rosholt was getting the better of Horwich early on only to get stopped in the third round, and this time around Rosholt decided to play things safe, earning a win without taking many chances. All three judges scored it 30-27 for Rosholt.

Rodriguez easily submitted an overmatched Doug Williams in the first round of a terribly one-sided fight. Rodriguez took Williams down quickly, got into full mount easily, and absolutely dominated him for a couple minutes before sinking in a rear-naked choke to force the tap. Williams agreed to take the fight on only a few hours' notice and deserves credit for that, but he didn't belong in the same cage with Rodriguez.

A former UFC champion whose career has had a lot of ups and downs, Rodriguez is now on a 12-fight winning streak. But he needs to stop just winning and start winning against high-quality competition. He'll take a step in that direction next month when he takes on Seth Petruzelli inside the Bellator cage.

In other Shark Fights action:

-- Emanuel Newton beat Ilir Latifi by unanimous decision in a fight that wasn't particularly interesting -- except at the end, when the announcer read the scores wrong and briefly led everyone to believe that Latifi had won the decision. Newton clearly deserved to win, and even Latifi was baffled before the decision was arrested and Newton was rightly declared the winner. As for the fight itself, it featured some bursts of stand-and-bang action but also some long periods of hesitation from both men, who seemed to be running out of steam as the fight wore on.

-- Erik Perez beat Douglas Frey by unanimous decision in a fun if one-sided fight. Perez out-classed Frey in all phases of the fight and won 30-27 on all three judges' scorecards.

-- Alan Jouban looked very good in beating Andrew Goldthwaite by third-round TKO, knocking Goldthwaite down with a big 1-2 on the feet and then finishing him off with punches on the ground. Jouban, who almost finished Goldthwaite with a triangle choke at the end of the first round, is a very good-looking young fighter.
