Rosholt, Rodriguez Win at Shark Fights 17

Filed under:

Jake Rosholt got revenge on Matt Horwich, while Ricco Rodriguez won his 12th straight fight in easy fashion, as Shark Fights put on its 17th event on Friday night in Frisco, Texas.

Rosholt, the former NCAA wrestling champion and UFC veteran, fought a cautious fight in defeating Horwich by unanimous decision. It was a rematch of a fight from eight months ago in which Rosholt was getting the better of Horwich early on only to get stopped in the third round, and this time around Rosholt decided to play things safe, earning a win without taking many chances. All three judges scored it 30-27 for Rosholt.

Rodriguez easily submitted an overmatched Doug Williams in the first round of a terribly one-sided fight. Rodriguez took Williams down quickly, got into full mount easily, and absolutely dominated him for a couple minutes before sinking in a rear-naked choke to force the tap. Williams agreed to take the fight on only a few hours' notice and deserves credit for that, but he didn't belong in the same cage with Rodriguez.

A former UFC champion whose career has had a lot of ups and downs, Rodriguez is now on a 12-fight winning streak. But he needs to stop just winning and start winning against high-quality competition. He'll take a step in that direction next month when he takes on Seth Petruzelli inside the Bellator cage.

In other Shark Fights action:

-- Emanuel Newton beat Ilir Latifi by unanimous decision in a fight that wasn't particularly interesting -- except at the end, when the announcer read the scores wrong and briefly led everyone to believe that Latifi had won the decision. Newton clearly deserved to win, and even Latifi was baffled before the decision was arrested and Newton was rightly declared the winner. As for the fight itself, it featured some bursts of stand-and-bang action but also some long periods of hesitation from both men, who seemed to be running out of steam as the fight wore on.

-- Erik Perez beat Douglas Frey by unanimous decision in a fun if one-sided fight. Perez out-classed Frey in all phases of the fight and won 30-27 on all three judges' scorecards.

-- Alan Jouban looked very good in beating Andrew Goldthwaite by third-round TKO, knocking Goldthwaite down with a big 1-2 on the feet and then finishing him off with punches on the ground. Jouban, who almost finished Goldthwaite with a triangle choke at the end of the first round, is a very good-looking young fighter.
