Leading up to their much-hyped encounter at UFC 148 it seemed like Chael Sonnen couldn’t say enough bad things about middleweight champion Anderson Silva, though the stream of negativity was of course to be expected considering Sonnen’s behavior before the two talented 185ers fought in 2010. At one point or another during their rivalry Sonnen insulted Silva’s courage, pride, skill, intelligence, family, and homeland.
Now, after being finished a second straight time, Sonnen has been relatively quiet about Silva other than to offer praise. Needless to say, the behavior hasn’t been lost on “The Spider”.
“It was a satisfaction, a sense of accomplishment. Brazil was place where it really should be,” said Silva of beating Sonnen in an interview with TATAME. “Other athletes who are supposedly thinking about speaking ill of Brazilians and our culture, our people, will think twice. I think Chael has learned his lesson.”
Though Silva didn’t get a chance to fight Sonnen in Brazil, he’ll still have a chance to entertain his countrymen in 2012 after stepping up on short notice to face Stephan Bonnar at UFC 153 in Rio de Janeiro. Meanwhile, Sonnen has set his sights on light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and will undoubtedly ramp up his verbal assault if successful in a scrap with Forrest Griffin this December.
