Jon Jones says lessons should be learned from UFC 151 fallout

Since coming to the forefront of MMA, UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones has been accused of hiding his true feeling behind a “good guy” persona. Now, in the wake of criticism from his role in the cancellation of UFC 151, it looks like Jones is done playing nice.

Jones has spoken frankly about the matter a number of times in the past week, going so far as to say the UFC’s handling of him during the ordeal made him feel like a piece of meat. However, he also says the dark cloud hovering over UFC 151 has a silver lining – fighters now know where they stand with the organization and the UFC now knows it needs to book better lineups.

“I think in the future, this can make me and Dana White even better off. For him to get out how he felt about me in that situation, it will help me look at things more business-oriented,” explained Jones in an interview with the Associated Press, alluding to White’s harsh assessment of his character in the immediate aftermath of axing the event.

“A lot of good can come out of it,” he continued. “Fighters can learn the lesson of doing what’s best for themselves and not feeling like puppets. I think the UFC has learned a lesson of making sure they stay loyal to the fans and give them full cards.”

Jones Admits White’s Words Hurt

The 25-year old’s increasingly self-centered approach to his career was also on display when asked about addressing criticism he should have taken a short notice fight with Chael Sonnen as a means of giving back to the company he made his name in.

“People tell me, ‘You’re the champ, you’ve got to take the fight. Being the champ wasn’t given to me. I don’t owe anybody anything,” Jones stated flatly.
