Roy Nelson named TUF 16 coach along with Shane Carwin

A little less than three years ago Roy Nelson emerged as the winner on TUF 10 and has put together a solid run in the UFC since, racking up victories over the likes of Stefan Struve, Mirko Filipovic, and most recently Dave Herman. The beer-bellied brawler’s next outing will come on the heels of going back to his roots, as “Big Country” has been named as a coach on TUF 16 with Shane Carwin serving in the other slot.

The two heavyweights, who will fight after the season ends, were announced as heading the Ultimate Fighter 16 squads in an official press release from the UFC.

Nelson Talks Initial Interest in Coaching TUF

Nelson holds an overall record of 17-7 with fifteen finishes while Carwin is 12-2 including five submissions and seven TKOs. In addition to having a talent for stopping their adversaries, the two also don’t particularly like each other as was evident based on comments in the promotional statement.

“The fans know how I like to conduct myself both in and out of the Octagon, and I respect every fighter, coach, official and fan in the UFC. But I cannot respect a man like Roy Nelson – because he shows no respect himself,” said Carwin of Nelson. “He is a keyboard warrior who doesn’t have the guts to talk trash to my face, but now he’s going to have to be in the same room, the same gym and finally the same Octagon as me. I know I am a better fighter and trainer than he is. I will prove I’m a better trainer in TUF and then, when we fight, I will hit him harder than anyone has ever hit him and teach him some respect.”

Not to be forgotten, Nelson fired a shot in Carwin’s direction as well, saying, “When I found out I was coaching against Shane Carwin I was so happy to get a chance to compete against this guy. As for being in the same room as him, I try not hang out with people that make me feel icky on the inside but, to coach TUF, I will make an exception.”

Taping is expected to start in August with the show featuring welterweight contestants competing for the seasonal crown.
