If UFC light heavyweight king Jon Jones upholds his 7.5-to-1 odds-on favorite status against Dan Henderson, Alexander Gustafsson (Pictured) will mark the most dangerous 205-pounder remaining who hasn’t had a taste of “Bones.”
While the 25-year-old isn’t necessarily the next in line, UFC president Dana White claimed Gustafsson’s diligently making his way up the totem pole for a tango with Jones. Many believe his range combined with his striking skills could present Jones with problems he’s yet to face in the big leagues.
But first things first, the Swede needs to prove himself against the division’s upper echelon.
“He’s ready for a big fight now, too,” White said during Monday’s conference call. “We’ll get him lined up with one of the top guys soon and we’ll find out where he sits and where he fits.”
“The Mauler” owns a practically perfect 14-1 résumé, with his lone blemish coming against then-undefeated Phil Davis in April 2010. He was last seen posting a unanimous decision win over Thiago Silva in April.
No word on who Gustafsson will face in his next Octagon outing. Perhaps what happens Saturday at “UFC on FOX 4” will provide some clarity.
