During a conference call with media on Monday, UFC President Dana White confirmed this weekend’s headlining tilt at UFC on FOX 4 between Mauricio Rua-Brandon Vera would result in one man being named the #1 contender at light heavyweight. However, given the recent records of each man many fans have been left wondering why either would get a crack at one the sport’s most revered championships.
White’s words also caught the attention of current divisional title-holder Jon Jones who didn’t appear to have an explanation for the development either.
“Scratching my head,” wrote Jones on Twitter, clearly confused by the opportunity Saturday night’s winner is being afforded. Jones is set to defend his belt in September against Dan Henderson.
Rua Excited About Possibility of Rematch with Jones
Regarding records, Rua is 1-2 in his last three tilts including a one-sided loss to Jones in March 2011, while Vera holds the same record and was also beaten soundly by “Bones”. Rua also happens to be coming off a loss to Henderson, and Vera’s only victory since August 2009 involved a controversial outpointing of Eliot Marshall.
