Strikeforce has been searching for an opponent to face Heavyweight Grand Prix champion Daniel Cormier and it appears they found their man.
Former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia has received the call to step in and face Cormier at the upcoming Strikeforce event currently rumored for Sept 29 in Sacramento.
Sources close to the match-up confirmed the new bout to MMAWeekly.com on Friday. MMAJunkie.com first reported the contest.
Over the last several months, Tim Sylvia has told everyone that would listen that he wanted another shot in the UFC. Well, if hes going to get back to the big show hes certainly being made to earn it.
With a 3-1 record over his last four fights, Sylvia has picked up victories in his last three fights in a row, finishing two of them by TKO.
The last time Sylvia fought under the Zuffa family of organizations was back in 2008 when he lost a heavyweight title fight against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Sylvia exited the promotion, but in recent months has been itching to get one more run in the Octagon.
As recently as Thursday, UFC President Dana White has stated that Sylvia would not be back in the Zuffa fold even as part of Strikeforce.
Thats not true, no, White answered when asked directly about Sylvias possible involvement with a Strikeforce bout.
Regardless of that statement, it appears at least for now that Sylvia will be welcomed to Strikeforce and will face Daniel Cormier in his final bout with the promotion before moving over to the UFC heavyweight division.
Cormier will battle Sylvia after an incredible run as an alternate in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix where he blew through the tournament with wins over Antonio Bigfoot Silva and Josh Barnett.
Following the fight in Sept against Sylvia, Cormier will then move over to the UFC as Strikeforce does away with its heavyweight division.
